About Mj Marggraff

My passion is to help humankind reach higher. It is my hope that my research, projects, and instruction will contribute to our goals to return to the Moon and for human spaceflight to Mars. I like to create and apply innovative applications to solve problems. My key areas of focus are space isolation and connections in time-delay conditions, advising ISS-based student projects, and STEM education and instructing space and aviation leaders of the future. My research project at USC included designing a innovative countermeasure to social isolation in space; space health on long-duration space flights could be at risk if not supported by new and effective measures for connectedness. My team and I have developed a social support agent for space, designed to connect astronauts with family and friends in time-delay conditions. The project translated to creating a new start-up company in the Bay Area, Kinoo, Inc. that connects families. The innovations that were derived from my research project was awarded two US patents . As creator of GravityGames® I support the student leaders of SEDS (Students for the Discovery and Exploration of Space) who are developing the next GravityGame 2.0 and 3.0. SEDS is the largest student-run space organization in the world of about 6000 members; many who are now SEDS students will be our space leaders in the future. In 2017, the GravityGames pilot, called StarCatcher, was made and played by astronauts on the station. The success of GravityGames has led to GravityGames2.0 that will be conducted by SEDS as a new SEDS initiative to inspire others to innovate for space. As an aviator I became a flight instructor to teach others, especially other women, about how learning to fly changes our confidence in ourselves in many ways. I completed NASTAR training for suborbital flight to understand the physical and emotional feelings of space flights and look forward to experiencing space one day. As an adjunct professor in Human Factors in Aerospace and Aviation, I teach the psychology and performance factors that support resilience, adaptation, and safety. My classes include how to be effective as a team, since my students are our next air and space leaders, problem solvers, and innovators.

    Kinoo Jun 2019 - Present
    San Francisco Bay Area
Kinoo is a new video communication platform that utilizes augmented reality and virtual activities to bring families together, even when they’re far apart. www.kinoo.comThe environment of space is called 'ICE' -- isolated, confined, and extreme. Isolation and confinement are one of the top five space health risks facing astronauts on long and challenging missions. I am dedicated to helping astronauts safely explore space while isolated. Since astronauts' families and close friends provide meaningful social connectedness, we have developed a communication system to provide ongoing support using a social agent. Additionally, long duration space expeditions are challenged by time-delays. TimeShifting brings astronauts "closer" to those on earth and feeling that their communications are more like "real time." Using both an agent and TimeShifting the communication exchanges will, we believe, contribute to the overall health and performance of astronauts.

GravityGames® involves students to design products that will be made in space for astronauts' use. Innovating real products for space is the best way to inspire the next generation of STEM students, aerospace professionals, and space leaders: GravityGames opens the way.GravityGames® inspires students for space by sending to the International Space Station (ISS) student-designed games made on the zero-gravity printer for the crew to play. GravityGames gives the crew something fun to do and opens the door to space for the next generation of space leaders to imagine, design, and manufacture in space innovations using revolutionary new technology. GravityGames1.0, called StarCatcher, debuted on the ISS in 2017. GravityGames2.0 will be lead by the Students for the Development and Exploration of Space (SEDS), the largest student-run space organization in the world, as a 2018-19 competition.
