I spent my time with HDR further developing the skills I learned with my previous work experience in the HVAC design industry. Working in an office that designs and constructs buildings primarily for the healthcare and technology industry, I spent the majority of my time with the company assisting in the design phase of a $31 million renovation to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. The Walter Reed renovation was a challenging project in which I became familiar with the complexities of transfer air and its importance in a medical setting. I also learned to make static pressure calculations that were in turn used to select the appropriate exhaust fan for critical zones of the medical center.

When I co-founded Blue Jay Bay with a colleague at Johns Hopkins, I had no prior experience in business or marketing. Being thrown into a completely new experience required that I learn the skills necessary to manage a successful business. From drafting an original business plan and governing documents that developed business infrastructure and ensured customer satisfaction to developing and launching a marketing campaign that achieved outreach of over 20% of the undergraduate population at Johns Hopkins, I had to learn and act quickly to succeed in this fast-paced environment. Before passing management responsibilities on to other undergraduate students, I successfully developed and implemented a purchasing strategy that used $2,000 to create an initial inventory and I hired a team of four students to coordinate sales, deliveries and day to day storage operations. Managing Blue Jay Bay was an incomparable experience that sparked my interest in pursuing business and marketing as a potential career path upon graduation.

I spent my summer at Southport Engineering Associates learning about the fundamentals of HVAC and fire protection design for commercial buildings. I spent about 75% of my time at my desk, performing load calculations and duct sizing for HVAC systems, performing LEED accreditation calculations for lighting and power systems, and creating a layout of a sprinkler system based on building geometry and NFPA building code. The remainder of my time was spent conducting site visits, in which I performed site surveys and met with clients to ensure satisfaction with completed work.In the final week of my internship, after becoming familiar with HVAC design principles and markup practices that are standard in the HVAC design industry, I was given the opportunity to design and draft an original HVAC ductwork layout and duct sizing for the penthouse level of a client's building. This work was then forwarded to the PE leading the project for approval.I walked away from my summer at Southport Engineering with a series of new skills. In addition to becoming proficient with AutoCAD LT, a popular CAD software used in HVAC design, I learned about the fundamentals of building design and construction in a way that could not be taught in a classroom setting.

I began my role at Ridgefield Chiropractic as an unpaid intern through my high school's senior internship program. Throughout my internship I became familiar with the practices necessary to manage an office for a small company. I worked at the front desk of the office where I made and cancelled appointments, learned to make and receive payments via cash, check, and credit, and checked patients into the office.Upon completion of my internship I was asked by the head chiropractor, Dr. Chris Mascetta, to stay at the office as a paid employee due to positive feedback from customers. I spent the next two summers working there as I continued to work the front desk of the office while also helping to reduce the workload on Dr. Mascetta by conducting patient therapy after each patient's adjustment.
