Datacash is an industry-leading provider of online payment gateways. As Operations Manager, I was responsible for management of systems and network infrastructure, IT, support, and operational procedures.I was highly involved in design, deployment and management of a complex, 24x7, high-availability, network infrastructure and software service.

Built a Research Group – selecting, recruiting and training staff – growing from just myself to 11 staff onsite plus others on remote sites. This Group operated as a largely autonomous business unit for several years, then deployed staff onto virtually every key project within the Company.Specified and designed Aculab’s first Internet Telephony product. This involved every stage of the product development, from business plan through development, marketing, deployment, and planning of follow-on strategies. Personally involved in design and development of every component of the product.Negotiated contracts with suppliers for software components embedded into our products.Worked with Marketing Department to build Internet Telephony market strategy – presented that strategy to customers at annual conference and at customer sites. Liased with customers to identify solutions to their problems; producing and executing engineering plans to meet those needs.

I joined Icecube Consulting to act as the software architect working on a feasibility study for a carrier-class Voice/Fax/Modem over IP system. The hardware and software architecture was completed, and shown to be a technically outstanding design. However, the financial case for a small Scottish company competing in the carrier-class market against large US corporations and multinational telephone companies could not be justified, and the project never moved beyond the feasibility study.This was, however, an excellent learning period for me. I had a chance to spend 3 months immersing myself in Voice over IP technology, and considering how I could build a product that was two or three years ahead of the market.

Shiva took over Spider Systems in August 1995. After the takeover I became part of a team working on re-engineering Shiva’s operating system. The objective was to produce a highly scalable, high-performance, modular set of network components, to be used on the full range of Shiva remote access products.I was one of the two most senior engineers, and was involved in all levels of architecture, specification, design and implementation. I acted as team leader for the engineers working on the network layer and packet forwarding components, and as deputy to the Project Leader - as well as taking a significant role in the development of software

I joined Spider Software as a Senior Software Engineer in 1991. I was originally working in the Software Integration Group, porting X.25 and TCP/IP protocol stacks onto customer platforms. I soon moved to the protocols group, and was given team leader responsibility for a series of protocol products: SpiderSTREAMS, SpiderPPP, and finally SpiderTCP. On each of these products I saw a complete release through from requirements analysis, through to release to customers, while maintaining older releases of the product.This work involved developing high quality, reliable, portable software - the source code was visible to customers, and was used on a very wide range of platforms.In April 1995, my team leadership role was recognized by promotion to Project Consultant.Throughout the period I worked for Spider Software I tracked IETF working groups, keeping up to date with Internet protocols, largely at the network layer, and establishing myself as the TCP/IP expert for the company.

At Edinburgh University's Centre for Speech Technology Research, I was involved in research at post-doctoral level into speech recognition and speech synthesis software. This involved both digital signal processing, and complex statistical modelling on both on traditional sequential processors and on Transputer networks. I was also responsible for developing software tools for speech scientists.During this period I was co-author of several published papers, and involved in undergraduate teaching.

Most of my work at Napier involved UNIX system administration, network management, and programming in C and Ada. I was also involved in teaching UNIX, Ada, and C; and was co-author of two papers published in Ada User during this time.

My work involved software, and some hardware, design and development on a wide range of computers and operating systems. I developed software ranging from low-level hardware drivers, to DES encryption libraries, mostly in C and 6809 assembly language.
