As an education coordinator, my responsibilities include program development, delivery, reporting and evaluation. Building on foundational knowledge of the natural resource landscapes of Alberta, I am part of a team that connects annually with thousands of students and teachers across the province through classroom and field programs, youth summits and teacher professional development. I play a lead role in developing and coordinating our wetland, water and agriculture programs including field trip and youth summit events such as the 2022 Cultivate Agriculture Youth Leadership Summit as well as one day Environmental Innovation Days such as Regional Agriculture Days (across AB), Water Innovation Days (Calgary and Edmonton) and Women in Outdoor Careers Day (Calgary). In organizing these programs, I connect with industry experts to fulfill speaking and tour roles, to connect students with the topic in a hands-on and engaging way.

As part of the education and outreach team, I delivered educational programming that increases participants' environmental literacy and confidence in the outdoors. The programming is based on Alberta's wetlands, wildlife and ecosystems and ties in with the provincial curriculum and key learning objectives. These programs take place in person and since the start of the 2020 school year have also included virtual programs. Outside of school groups, I provided programming for birthday parties, youth groups, and the general public. These programs include tours of the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery, aquatic invertebrate dipping, learn to snowshoe and learn to fish clinics. Other activities and games are used to inform participants about healthy habitats, animal adaptations, aquatic invasive species, and fish identification.I developed educational programs and activities that meet provincial education curriculum learning objectives and expectations. An example of this is a 35-minute program for grade 2 students based on the water unit. In this program, students solidify their knowledge of the states of matter and the water cycle. Students make connections between the regions of Alberta and water with how we use it, where it is found, and all of the things water benefits. I supported the Program Coordinator and Outreach Coordinator on province-wide programs such as Fish In Schools (FinS) and DUC Wetland Discovery Days through communications, scheduling, supply shipping and program delivery efforts. I have additionally supported other projects within the Alberta Ministry of Environment and Parks through the development of social media outreach campaigns and educational resources.

In the seasonal Forest and Wetland Educator role, I delivered field trip programs to students grades 4-12 in the Calgary and Central Alberta region through a range of cross-curricular and hands-on activities. After program completion, I recorded statistics to aid in planning future programming, presenting to the board of directors and for grant writing. This role required travel out of Calgary and I supported the coordination of logistics through booking hotels, ensuring the proper equipment was packed and maintained, and coordinating with my co-educators for the duration of our travels.

In the Youth Programs Assistant role I worked with a small team to conduct school and partnership outreach to expand the scope of the Young Water Speaks national storytelling contest, Waterlution’s current youth project. To fulfill my duties I emailed and called teachers, school boards/districts, as well as potential partner organizations who may be interested in providing prizes, workshops or other benefits to the project. In this role I also worked on planning the travelling exhibition where the first year winners and regional runner ups will be displayed publically. This involved helping to write proposal documents for venues, reaching out to said venues, and helping to plan the displays. I presented the exhibition in a talk with one of the partnering galleries, Port Moody Arts Centre as part of the opening events for the exhibition. Additionally I presented a small workshop for the youth advisory board members on how to provide environmental education, including how to engage with teachers and youth on environmental issues such as climate change.

Thunder Bay

As the teaching assistant for the first year Foundation of Outdoor Recreation course, I taught the class how to do APA formatting for their papers and helped lead a peer review lab. I marked the APA assignments of all 52 students and aided in marking the final papers and final exams.

This job entailed renting outdoor equipment to clients and students for their outdoor excursions whether it’s one day or two weeks. Great working knowledge of what gear people need and want was a key to my success in this roleI gained skills in repairing, testing, and cleaning equipment such as tents, stoves, water filters and more. I also built a new ski rack which helped to improve my ability to design and create something out of plywood and other construction materials. I improved my ability to handle power and hand tools, and my creative thinking and problem solving with this project.I demonstrated efficiency with the rental system and was able to complete transactions, add and edit gear information, and complete inventories.

As part of my final year of university, I had a professional work experience placement with Tourism Thunder Bay. Throughout the year I worked on a project looking at the development of a multi-use trail running from Thunder Bay to Nipigon, Ontario. This project gave me experience in the consultation of the affected stakeholders and communities as I organized and hosted a roundtable meeting with municipal representatives from each of the 5 communities along the affected rail line (Thunder Bay, Shuniah, Dorion, Red Rock, and Nipigon). In preparation, I studied best practices from other rail trails around the world, studied the previous work done on the project before it was put aside, and re-evaluated those documents such as the business plan.

As part of the Lakehead University RBC Work Integrated Learning Program I was selected to gain work experience at Norwest Community Health CentreI completed a project that looks at how the physical layout of a workspace can affect team cohesion, communication, and workplace efficiency. To do this research I did an in-depth review of existing literature, focus groups with staff, and spaghetti diagrams.

This job involved window and eavestrough cleaning for residential properties. This job helped me to hone in on my attention to detail while being efficient in order to clean windows to customer satisfaction, while not affecting revenue. I learned cold calling and marketing skills through this position as we knocked on doors to offer services to other families in the community.

Worked summers from 2013-2016, plus one fall season in 2014.Feeding and care for the 80+ horses on site including minor first aid (occasional cuts and scratches, abcesses, one staph infection). Led camper groups plus their counsellours on day rides. Taught groups about caring for and riding horses including skills such as grooming, saddling, and steering.

Summer position only. Worked with children aged 10-14. Many activities were taken up including but not limited to camping, canoeing, horseback riding, challenge courses, and leadership games. Engaged kids in learning many skills such as communication, group dynamics, and survival skills. Ensured campers were happy and healthy for the duration of their time at camp.
