Assistant Professor
My research and teaching activities were focused on designing and understanding materials from both experimental and computational approaches for automotive, energy & environmental applications. Some areas I have worked on are photovoltaic, optoelectronics, semiconductors and plasmonics, polymer composites/nano-composites, friction materials (brakes & clutches), and tribology.
Scientific Researcher
Computational materials design for energy applications.
Postdoctoral Scientist
My research at NIMS was focused on exploring the potential of alkaline-earth-metals silicides and digermanides for solar cells applications. These compounds with a larger energy gap (1.0–1.3 eV) are favourable for the solar-cell application because a conversion efficiency of single-junction cell increases with photon energy and it has a maximum at the photon energy of about 1.4 eV. One important example is barium disilicide (BaSi2), a Si-based low cost material composed of abundant and inexpensive elements. Despite exhibiting many promising material characteristics and many experimental studies, the thin-films PV technologies based on BaSi2 has not yet reached to the device level. This is because many fundamental physical properties especially band gap and optical properties of BaSi2 are not sufficiently understood. Therefore, in our study [M. Kumar et. al., App. Phys. Exp. 7, 071203, 2014], employing a hybrid density functional theory (DFT), we reveal the origin of the large absorption coefficient in BaSi2, which is roughly two to eighty times larger at ħω-Eg = 0.5 eV than other conventional absorbers like Si, GaAs, CdTe, CuInSe2 and Cu2ZnSnS4. This is explained on the basis of electronic band structure of BaSi2 which shows that the lowest conduction band has a small dispersion due to the localized Ba-d states, generating flat bands.
Guest Researcher
One month visit to Dept of Physics and Nanotechnology, university of Oslo.
Postdoctoral Scientist
During my stay at KTH, I learned simulation and theoretical techniques to strengthen my expertise in material science. Based on the first-principles DFT studies, we explore Cu-V-VI (V = Sb, Bi; VI = S, Se) system as the low cost and earth abundant materials for future PV technologies [M. Kumar et. al. Appl. Phys. Lett. 102, 060109, 2013, J. Renewable Sustainable Energy, 5, 031616, Energy Procedia, 44, 176, 2014]. In this ternary system, two types of stoichiometric compounds (one is I–III–VI2 materials like CuSbS2, CuSbSe2, CuBiS2, and CuBiSe2 and another is I3–III–VI3 compounds such as Cu3SbS3, Cu3SbSe3, Cu3BiS3 and Cu3BiSe3) exists. Our study revealed that all these compounds have band gap of Eg ≈ 1.1–1.8 eV, which is in the desired optimum range for PV applications. Moreover, we show that all these compounds have strong absorption coefficients, which is one of the important criteria for any material to be used as an absorber in PV applications. In summary, this indium-free ternary Cu-V-VI (V = Sb, Bi; VI = S, Se) system possibly can generates 12 different compounds. Overall, these can be used as absorber material either in single-junction or triple- or multi-junction PV systems based on their band gap energies.
Project Scientist
I got an opportunity to work as a project scientist in this big research project (Budget: INR ~10 million) funded by Dept. of Sci and Tech (DST), Govt. of India. Responsibilities in the project: I was given complete responsibility as a Project Scientist in this project to handle various parts such as;• Full involvement in the purchase of a single end inertia brake dynamometer for performance evaluation of brake- pads for LCVs, brake-shoes/linings for HCVs and brake pads for Volvo-bus (B7R) from M/s Pyramid Precision Engg. India, followed by the commissioning in IIT Delhi, installation and making it fully functional. The outcome of the project: Various new indigenous formulations of friction materials for LVCs/HCVs (Tata Truck and Volvo Bus) were designed, developed, and tested as per friction industry standards. A unique facility of Inertia Dynamometer for brake performance evaluation of LCVs, HCVs, was procured and installed in this project. Such facility is available only with very big Industries and not with any research group in India. Even in abroad, such facilities are rare with research groups in universities. A new concept of nano-metallic filler (copper) was first time tried in this project and showed excellent results. Various mathematical models such as regression analysis, MCDM etc. were applied to understand weightages of influencing factors in friction materials. A total of 12 articles (in Int Journals) and 5 conference papers were published from this work.
