Marketing Director & Digital Transformation
Stevenage, United Kingdom
I joined The Wine Society to explore my passion for wine and also because there were some great transformation challenges in digital and brand. At The Wine Society I covered all aspects of marketing (and effectively sales too) in a very competitive sector. This included customer acquisition and retention, digital (web, apps, social), direct marketing, CRM, PPC / SEO, PR and brand. I had a team of 25 staff, grown from 15 when I started thanks to a major Digital / E-commerce investment. I'm very keen on teamwork, my department at The Wine Society rates as a '2-star' organisation in the Best Companies survey, significantly above the overall organisation's score.I'm passionate about the opportunities from digital and am proud that The Wine Society has been awarded Online (Wine) Retailer of The Year awards for 2017 and 2018.I was a member of the Executive Team that runs the overall business; I had responsibility for Marketing and since joining in early 2010 I made significant transformations largely through strategy definition and execution:1. From a primarily mail-order business to a majority online business, with an integrated web / apps / social / best multi-channel marketing operation2. New approaches to CRM, currently implementing a new solution to enable significant improvements to our targeting and relevance to our members (customers)3. Brand re-positioning towards younger wine drinkers, including target audience, brand essence and visualsThis may sound too much for a traditional organisation, but there's a great willingness to do the right things, and we have been awarded Decanter "Wine Merchant of the Year" for 7 of the last 8 years which shows that the transformations are really working.I've also been on the faculty for industry courses run by the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET), presenting on business and commercial knowledge to up-and-coming wine business people.
