"If you want to achieve greatness, stop asking for permission." ~Unknown I've been in design leadership for 17 years and I’ve built creative teams at 4 different companies from the ground up. Some of the greatest User Experience Design (UXD) that has happened on my watch is not my own. My amazing, award-winning teams have risen to the occasion to develop the next generation of user-centered design awesomeness. I have had the pleasure of working with some of the most talented people working in design and UX to date.Great leadership requires far more than just being able to do great design. You have to know how to inspire people to be their best at all times. You have to be able to push people out of their comfort zone and draw out their best work. Building a culture that nurtures creativity in engineering-centric companies is no small feat. Combining creativity, strategy and a willingness to show by doing are the keys to building a design culture that works in companies like Johnson Controls.I lead from we, not me. As a leader, I would much rather hold my teams up and let them take the bow for great work. I've truly been inspired by all of the great talent I’ve been able to work with and develop in my career. It's their efforts and visions that need to be on showcase, not mine.Leadership isn't about holding on tight and controlling every aspect of UXD; it's about letting go and trusting the talented people around you to do the best work they can and deliver amazing things.Having strong design values and principles keeps everyone on the same page. My teams have always been guided by them and I continue to use them in everything we do.
