Macroclimate® sustainably manages $180 million of assets as an SEC-registered impact investment firm. Peter Kriss, Ph.D. now serves as Managing Partner & Chief Investment Officer.

Mark created the Macroclimate® 30 index of the largest coal-fired power plant owners worldwide which sets a standard for fossil fuel divestors (over $6B in assets are invested in equity mutual funds that use the index as a screen). Macroclimate® also served as an incubator for Geofinancial Analytics, which delivers transparency on greenhouse gas super emitters to global financial markets. See above.

Macroclimate's Private Client practice provides science-oriented asset management services for very high net worth families. The practice incorporates innovations in academic research and captures the cost advantages of institutional investing. It began in 2004 as a family office to better manage proceeds from the sales of Mark’s prior venture companies, and soon expanded to become a multi-family office serving other entrepreneurs and their families as well. In January 2016, it became a unit of Macroclimate®.

Dimensional Fund Advisors is a $600 billion mutual fund manager which has a long history of applying academic research to practical investing. The Dimensional Sustainability Funds Council is a group of consultants and wealth managers not affiliated with Dimensional working together with Dimensional to research the best ways to provide sustainability investment solutions to investors. As a council member, Mark helped drive construction of the first broadly-diversified “fossil free” emerging markets equity portfolio (DESIX).

The Institute on the Environment (IonE) at the University of Minnesota works to solve grand environmental challenges in collaboration with others, including their Natural Capital Project in partnership with Stanford University, World Wildlife Fund, The Nature Conservancy and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The IonE External Advisory Board is an international group consisting of government, academic, NGO and corporate leaders who provide strategic guidance to the Institute while sharing diverse, high-level perspectives and expertise on local, regional and global environmental issues.

Vision Prize® is a research partnership that captures scientific meta-knowledge on climate risks and solutions, in collaboration with IOP Publishing and researchers at Carnegie Mellon University. Three-year data collection for the Vision Prize project, involving 340 climate scientists as expert panelists, ended December 2014. Additional data analysis and visualization is currently underway with research partners and collaborators, including Macroclimate®.

Mark served as a mentor in the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Stanford's Graduate School of Business from 1995 to 2008.

In 1993, Mark co-founded one of the first commercial Internet companies, with financial backing from Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, a leading private equity firm. Through a series of acquisitions, the venture morphed from "Global Internet" to become Cohesive Technology Solutions, a mid-size ($45 million in annual revenues) provider of Internet access, IT services and network security software (which included the first Windows® firewall localized for the Japanese market). Exodus Communications acquired Cohesive’s services group in 1999; Cisco Systems acquired its software group, which Mark led, in 1997. Written up as a Stanford Business School case study ("Pac Net").

Mark's fascination with real-world information markets dates from the mid-1980s when he spent five years working with some of the world's leading currency traders in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Zurich and Paris as a part of a successful software venture, which he co-founded, to develop analytic tools and position-keeping systems for currency and fixed income traders. This venture, FX Development Group, Inc., was acquired by Dow Jones & Co. in 1989, and subsequently was written up as a Stanford Business School case study ("DX Development").

Founded as the Stanford Research Institute in 1946, SRI is an independent, nonprofit research institute conducting client-sponsored research and development for government agencies, commercial businesses, foundations, and other organizations. At time of Mark's tenure, SRI employed approximately 2,700 researchers, scientists, policy experts and other staff. Author of Information Gateways, an SRI report on future opportunities in information services which inspired a 1985 Business Week cover story, and helped shape US policy on new media. 1986 winner of the Exceptional Achievement Award, SRI's highest consulting honor.

Research Director of $1.5 million multiclient market research division which, at time of Mark's tenure, was widely recognized as the industry leader, serving more than 700 clients worldwide. Author of numerous industry reports on videotex (precursor of web-based ecommerce), and other on-line consumer services delivered via cable TV and telephone networks.
