Metro Counseling, Inc. is one of three sites statewide that participating in this pilot. Thus, Metro became one of the first drug and alcohol treatment facility in Mississippi to conduct in-house HIV screening. Further, I developed and initiating the site’s HIV rapid testing program on-site (1 of only two MSDH/MSDMH Mental Health HIV testing pilot initiatives in Jackson, MS). Worked [ing] with The Mississippi Department of Health and Mississippi Department of Mental Health to develop testing implementation action plan for HIV testing in mental health facilities. Conducted individual and group counseling to clients involved in alcohol and drug abuse programs, via pre and post release programs; assisted clients in obtaining services from community and governmental agencies.

The first of its kind in Mississippi. I oversaw grant deliverables, supervision of part-time staff and volunteer activities, reports. I directed, coordinated, and facilitated behavioral science based interventions and health educational (HIV/STI) sessions for African American men; coordinated outreach activities for at risk communities; maintained and regularly documented confidential client files (intake process); reported on programmatic goals to agency and funders; and assess needs and behavior modification of clients/participants. POMI developed Mississippi’s first Black (Same-Gender Loving/Gay) Pride event. The event is still in existence and it happens annually. It is the largest community outreach event that brings HIV awareness and education to Mississippi’s AA MSMs (and AA GLBTs). (Demonstration project ended May 2006; US Conference of Mayors/$78,000.00)
