As a student teaching intern at Slauson Middle School, I was able to lead teach 4 sections of Math 6 for approximately 3 months and 1 section of Math 7 for 3 weeks. During my time at Slauson, I created and Implemented lessons based on Common Core State Standards and accumulated over 150 hours of classroom experience. Specifically with the 7th grade class, I was also able to experiment with different instruction modes, such as blended and flipped classroom environments as well as lecture and video-based instruction techniques.

I was selected from a competitive pool of over 640 applicants to serve as an Intern Teacher in a rigorous 6-week academic intensive college access program for high-potential, underserved middle school students. As an intern teacher I participated in more than 140 hours of pre-summer training to master instructional and management best practices. Through this experience, where I team-taught 35 rising 7th grade students in science, I also honed skill such as task analysis and active participation through lesson planning. I also learned basic curriculum improvement skills, as we piloted a new curriculum that was very skeletal. I achieved average student growth of 183% and personal growth of 22% on a Teacher Excellence Rubric.

As the Officer of Tech and Media, my job is to handle all technology accounts held by the organization. This includes a website, a Facebook and Google+ page, a Twitter account, as well as a Google Account through the University of Michigan, which includes our documents, budgets, etc. My job is to manage these things as well as find solutions for technological problems that arise as well as keeping our social media up to date.

As a CI, my role was to be leader and supervisor for my team for the curriculum for the middle school students, which the high school students mostly taught. I had morning meetings with my high school staff to talk about how our day would go, graded homework, helped any of my students with math, and- most importantly- acted as a role model for the students. The program strives to teach its students not only math, but caring, compassion, and kindness and how to be successful. As a CI, it was my job to embody these values and at all times show them.

As a College Assistant, I helped organize and run events in the camp, mostly from the background. There are a range of tasks College Assistants (or CA's) can be asked to take on, such as morning and afternoon tutoring and homework help for the students in the camp, setting up/cleaning up lunches, escorting kids to lunch, creative designs of poster boards to decorate the camp and rooms, runs to and from the camps main office on campus, and any other needs that arise in camp usually a CA will handle.

The role of a Teaching Assistant (TA) is taken very seriously in this program. Each TA, which is a high school student, is assigned to a team of 4 other TA's, 10 middle school students. and a College Instructor (CI) and is then given an assignment of 2 kids. TA's are expected to, at all times, be role models for their students and act as faculty of Wayne State University. They also are teachers to their students, giving 1.5 hours of instruction in the topics covered as opposed to the 1/2 and hour the kids get with a college professor. They also attend afternoon classes in high school and higher mathematics.
