We managed massive deprecation and migration projects for the core Square payments flow but also built tooling, infrastructure and platform support to materially improve the lives of product-facing Risk teams. I led the enormous migration of the core payment flows from legacy endpoints and codepaths in a service we didn’t own into the more modern generic flow; dealing with every kind of tech debt you can imagine. The completion of this migration saw no impact to payments flow nor to the Merchant experience. My vision turned that migration work into two different services providing sync and async platforms for teams to write the minimal amount of boilerplate and to be able to instead focus on their core business logic for integrating new Square products into the Risk flows. My work extracting an embedded risk state machine from our payouts service allowed us to build payment’s backstops; giving us graceful degradation options when ML platforms -or any upstream service- had issues. My work ensured that Risk took back ownership of key decision points along the payment flow. I led my expanding team on platform best practices such as business level metrics, in-depth metrics boards, reliability and retry philosophies and pushed myself and the team to experiment with whatever technology we could get our hands on. The open, supportive but assertive culture we built ensured that even junior engineers had room to grow with a solid model for what excellence looked like. Our investments in team culture and self-direction created a team providing consistent, valuable services and improvements to our sister Risk engineering teams. Show less
