I have been involved in teacher professional development since 1996. In that time, the landscape of science teaching has changed, the standards have been rewritten, and the politics of teaching have become almost treacherous. I am currently the Executive Director of the Michigan Mathematics and Science Centers Network. In this position I have been very lucky to find a network of people who are focused on the improvement of Mathematics and Science teaching and learning in Michigan. In my business, Starr and Associates, we work to help teachers push their knowledge and skills in classroom science teaching. Through carefully crafted, thoughtful, professional development experiences, we work with teachers to help identify your interest and needs in teaching science and then develop ways to meet those needs. Currently, our primary focus is on project-based science materials and technology. Currently, we are developing workshops that will support understanding the Next Generation Science Standards. This will be a large part of what teachers will need in the coming years. What will these changes mean to classrooms? That is the question that will need to be answered through professional development experiences.
