About Michael Marbut, M.S.
Hello, thank you for visiting my LinkedIn. whether we just met and I gave you my card, or if I've just sent you a connection request. The first word I could spell was idbehold from Doom. By 8th grade I was dual booting computers and working on command line. Since then I have loved computer's and worked on them constantly. When I began college I wanted to become a teacher, since I love sharing and developing curriculum so much. I still love teaching, training, and learning so much.In College I found a passion for Linux and Open Source. My Senior year I found Johnny Long's DEFCON talk "No Tech Hacking" and I couldn't get enough of Cyber Security and Penetration Testing. I realized then that people were getting legitematly paid to hack and I wanted to be a part of it.During college I worked at Best Buy. I developed the connected life program at my store and trained new associates on how to get customers connected to the internet, networks, and services.I transitioned to the Geek Squad and learned computer repair. I quickly began process improvement for our Geek Squad Precinct. I quickly became a subject matter expert and started training others on new processes and new repair techniques. I wrote several articles and guides for the Geek Squad knowledge base, Geek Squad Central and Geek Squad Armory.Alas when I joined the Navy I didn't get a job in hacking, I was assigned a job as a Logistics Specialist. Now I have been in the Navy for 5 years and have begun my transition back to civilian life. I am getting ready to begin a career involved with my passions.I hold a Bachelors in History and I am working on my Masters in Cybersecurity. My beautiful wife and amazing children drive me to my best everyday and I am driven to success because of them.I know spend my time practicing hacking in online capture the flag competitions, vulnerable virtual machines, and on computer's in my house. I work on Java, Python, and SQL in my spare time.Need anything? Just ask.

President
Cyber Security Engineer
Cyber Security Analyst
Enterprise Security Administrator
Work in a small team to control access for 800 employees.Developed PowerShell scripts to read tickets from users and modify user accounts in Active Directory to ensuring compliance with authorization and least privilege.Made 536 updates, corrections, and additions to Active Directory Security Group Properties, ensuring that each group is properly handled and proper authorization is received before users are added.Wrote documentation on new processes for users. The clear new directions enabled users to complete the processes on their own, reducing the re-work required by our team.
Logistics Specialist
I participated in two Middle Eastern deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve while helping to maintain a 99% flight completion rate. It was an arduous time for me aboard aircraft carriers. It was during this time that I learned and studied Cybersecurity in my free time.During my time for the Navy I also managed a million-dollar tool control program with high attention to detail while developing processes to reduce costs and increase efficiency. The tools require 100% accountability 4 times daily, as many in Naval aviation can attest to. This provided unique challanges to ensuring all tools were accounted for at all times. To help I wrote a digital tracking system to monitor broken tools which increased visibility and anticipated tool replacement requirements which lead to faster tool replacement rates.I might be most proud of my time developing the DLA disposition services program at HSM-74 during which I aquired over $200,000 at no cost to the squadron's budget.Maintained building security by standing assistant duty officer watches, performed risk assessments and remediated risks during such watches, leading to zero mishaps or security breaches. When FRCSE 900 division discontinued Forklift licensing, I researched and developed the Material Handling Equipment (MHE) at my command, enabling me to qualify all eligible drivers, which increased squadron readiness and overall qualification level. This was never before done, and I taught several neighboring squadrons how to qualify their sailors also.I also worked on many of the computers used by the Navy, including troubleshooting and repairing proxy settings, network connectivity issues, and security concerns.I worked to maintain the NALCOMIS database system which is used to track maintenance actions performed on Naval Aircraft.
Advanced Repair Agent
Worked at Geek Squad, diagnosing and repairing customer laptops.Primary responsibilities included:Check in/ check outHardware and software diagnosisHardware RepairTroubleshootingVirus RemovalData BackupsComputer optimizationCustomer serviceShipping, receiving, and trackingCash handlingResearched and developed the Agent Johnny Utah (AJU) program a remote desktop support service for my precinct improving computer repair efficiency and complying with company policy. I then trained other agents how to connect, troubleshoot, and manage the AJU program. When I left the program was at 50% utilization which exceeded the companies requirement of 30%.Developed and wrote Geek Squad Armory and Geek Squad Central articles to support Geek Squad Agents in other stores. Our workflow was severely slowed by the fact the the precinct only had one KVM switch. When I saw this, I corrected it by adding a KVM switch, doubling the number of desktops we could work on at one time and reduced the number awaiting repair to 0.During research and training for the Geek Squad I learned that precincts have local network share drives. When I looked at ours it contained no data. So I placed the Geek Squad tools on this drive, and taught the other agents how to map it on customer computers. This reduced the need for DVDs and Flash drives used in the precinct and increased the speed at which these tools could be run. It also provided a central location for updated copies and reduced the risk of utilizing out of date software. When Windows 8 rolled out, the Geek Squad tools would not boot on secure boot UEFI computers. So I utilized the Windows 8 Software development kit to write a Windows 8 PE for Geek Squad to allow work on Windows 8 computers during initial phase of Windows 8 launch.
Sales Associate
Built entire solutions to solve customers dilemmas.Researched developed and trained other employees how to use internet provider sign up service. This previously went unused because it required careful entry of customers addresses. Upon further research I discovered how to format addresses so that we could provide internet access without directing customers elsewhere.Ported sales tracking system from Excel to Access to increase visibility on sales data and improve management of sales tracking records. Demonstrated Sales Tracking database to district staff at a meeting with my General Manager.
Supervisor
Worked at Tsunami Scuba as a shift supervisor. Primary responsibilities were: customer service, cash handlingmerchandisingCheck in/ check out of rental equipmentRepair rental equipmentWhen store what renovated and SCUBA tank filling station was updated I recorded a employee training video that became required viewing for new employees to use the fill station. Reducing accidents and improving efficiency.Went above and beyond the requirement of the job by becoming SCUBA tank visual inspector qualified allowing me to visually inspect SCUBA tanks, an annual requirement for all customer and rental SCUBA tanks.
