Software Engineering Intern

Moffett Field, California, Us

Developed prototype software modules for the ground station component of a system designed to provide General Aviation pilots in Alaska with increased situational awareness.Within the ground station component, time-sensitive aviation weather and airspace data is collected from external web services and visualized on NASA's World Wind virtual globe. The World Wind visualization is part of a Java-based user interface that could be located at flight service station and monitored by a flight service specialist. The data is updated at regular intervals or, if necessary, on demand. The data is compressed to about 10% of its original size and delivered to a flight deck component via satellite. A hierarchical clustering algorithm is used to minimize the overall cost of delivering data.Aircraft would be equipped with a flight deck component consisting of a sensor platform that receives the data and feeds them to a World Wind-based mobile application. The application provides situational awareness, such as the received weather data, real-time visualization of terrain, and a flight tracker.
