I am a research scientist and educator in biology. My laboratory studies the locomotion of aquatic animals with particular interest in how behavior is governed by biomechanics, sensing, and neuromuscular control. Our approach combines experimentation and mathematical modeling in projects that are supported by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. These projects include studying predator-prey strategy, the hydrodynamics of fish propulsion, how fish sense water flow, and the neuromuscular control of walking in animals that lack a brain. I collaborate closely with the graduate students in my lab and engineers who design biologically-inspired devices. I teach introductory human physiology and upper-level courses in biomechanics and physiology and my lab supports the mentorship of students from a diversity of backgrounds informally and through programs that support minority scientists at UC Irvine.
