LAWYER TURNED BUSINESSMANAfter ten years working as a litigator, it was time to find something new. Preferably I could leverage my law degree into a position that involved 100% less litigation and 100% more business.In 2006, I stumbled across the Medicare set-aside (MSA) industry. In three short years, I went from a small law firm setting, to a national provider of MSA services, to running a multi-million dollar MSA business within the country's largest TPA (Sedgwick). I feel blessed every single day as I have found a career path that is rewarding and enjoyable. LEARNED TO BE A BUSINESSMANAny lawyer will tell you that it is difficult to run a law practice because practicing law always gets in the way. So my ten years of litigation didn't provide a solid foundation for running a business. But I had great mentors that helped me to develop some new skills: reading a p/l statement, creating million dollar budgets, forecasting revenues, product pricing, market analysis, and how to leverage relationships within a large company to get my individual goals accomplished. DOUBLED REVENUE AND PROFIT MARGIN IN ONE YEARDoubling revenue in any year makes a great success story. But our Medicare team doubled revenue and our profit margin at the same time. It was truly a team effort: We made dramatic improvements to our processes and greatly enhanced our technology to reduce cycle times. We also slashed our labor expenses by creating a better system for accountability. ENJOY SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY PROCESS INTEGRATIONI have always enjoyed the blending of technology and business. So far I have had the pleasure of: building three systems based on technology; building one software application from scratch; and enhancing a second application.
