Developing Construction Engineer
Upon arriving back in the office from my secondment in Shetland, I was put on to the BGT Miskar project. This was a shutdown job which the installation of a Surface Jet Pump on the suction of the Production Compressor to utilise power available from the Gas Turbine driver to recycle HP gas as motive force to boost the pressure of gas from the wells. While on this project, I was given the title of project engineer and was involved in all aspects of the job. I seen the job through, from workpack creation to signing off certification after successful installation. I spent 3 weeks on the Miskar platform off the coast of Tunisia during the shutdown, which was completed ahead of schedule. While on the project I was responsible for the following – • Creation of construction (construct and destruct) workpacks and all related jobcards in the mPower system.• Creating all PCNs and tracking these through a PCN tracker that both Aberdeen and Woking could implement.• Assisting LOLER with creating a scaffold requirement and lifting plan with model shots to support plans.• Creating and keeping track of all material/tools and equipment/PPE/consumables requisitions.• Creation of growth cards when conditions changed during both the pre TAR and TAR.• Creating and keeping track of all TQ’s through a TQ tracker that both Aberdeen and Woking could maintain.• Creating all shipping manifests and invoices and liaising daily with expeditor to ensure everything was shipped accordingly and minimised any delays on the construction plan.• Reporting timesheets daily to Aberdeen, showing what jobcards had been worked on and by whom. By reporting this way we were able to report progress and ensure our s-curve was followed as planned.• Submit daily construction report, detailing P.O.B (persons on board), any HSE issues, any other potential constraints etc.
Developing Construction Engineer
After September 2014, I completed the trainee programme with Petrofac and progressed into a Developing Construction Engineer role. I continued working on the SGP project in Shetland, performing the following roles while working for the pre-commissioning and commissioning departments - • Piping inspection using a borescope. This was essential prior to reinstatement in order to ensure piping systems had met client and contractor specifications,• Coordination of PSV testing and installation. I was responsible for liaising with construction to determine the priority systems and check if PSVs within the system had been tested. I would then contact our sub-contractor to have valves tested and then installed back into the system by construction before the calibration certs had expired.• Coordinating load bearing tests of mechanical lifting equipment. While working in commissioning I calculated the load bearing test requirements of different mechanical lifting equipment and then coordinated with our sub-contractor to perform these tests.I was then responsible for signing off the completion sheets for the equipment.• Focal point for pipework reinstatement. While working in the pre-commissioning department, I was the Petrofac point of contact for test pack reinstatement with the client. Our duties included, but were not limited to, walking lines of test packs and verifying all items in the bill of materials are installed, advising construction of punch list items and chasing these through to be fitted, liaising with painting to ensure all A or B punch items have been rectified before reinstatement, liaising with flange management sub-contractor, and signing off completion sheets with client.
Trainee Construction Engineer
At the beginning of 2014, during my second year of Petrofacs construction trainee development programme, I was seconded to the Laggan Tormore Project at the Shetland Gas Plant. It was here that I would have the chance to utilise my skillset gained in previous projects and gain the opportunity to learn further due to the unique nature of this project. During my secondment to the Laggan Tormore project, I had the opportunity to expand my current knowledge in the following disciplines and undertake the following roles - • Working alongside a variety of departments such as structural, electrical, piping, civil works, instrumentation, mechanical, QA/QC, pre-commissioning and commissioning.• Coordinated the construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning and handover of the ESDV valve pit connected to the Sub-Sea 7 pipeline. This involved coordinating with all departments involved. I was involved with piping and valve erection, NDT, flange tightening, flange management, pressure testing, leak testing, operating ESD valves, and water sampling. The mentioned activity was very critical and we had a tight schedule to adhere to; it was considered a shut-down job.• I was charged with coordinating our own construction group for the readiness of piping systems, the subcontractor providing the testing services and the client, Total, for witnessing of the final testing and flushing of each test pack. I became the pre-commissioning focal point for all piping testing activities. • Coordinated hydro testing, working with sub-contractors in order to test loose spools prior to reinstatement.• Night-shift focal point for Petrofac assisting Aker in the retro jetting, drying and lube oil flushing of the pipework in the GTG units. This involved coordinating scaffold requirements, ensuring the correct permits were in place and signing on to them, ensuring the correct ISO/NAS standards were met, along with a variety of other tasks.
Trainee Construction Engineer
As part of Petrofacs trainee development programme we were seconded to Gdansk, Poland on the FPF1 project. This was an semi submersible refurbishment project. There was a huge scope of work involved within the project and as it progressed through the construction phases, we were assigned to a different discipline to shadow and learn from. While working on this project I developed the following skill-set within each discipline.• Conducted GVI and CVI inspections identifying pitting in shell plate and weld defects.• Assisted with leak testing of sponson sections to identify any potential weld defects.• Completed surveys within tanks and columns measuring and marking up steel replacements.• Gained experience in fabrication shops, fully understanding how they are ran and helped monitor progress of sponson and blister fabrication.• Tracked material control to Remontowa’s subcontractor, Mostostal, who were completing all fabrication for the PAR’s and PAU’s and became familiar with identifying piping components. • Attended PQR of copper nickel, stainless and carbon steel gaining familiarisation of welding procedures.• Monitored both construct and destruct scope of structural work both on and off the platform and kept records of progress through the marking up of drawings. This was reported almost daily to the construction supervisor.• Understanding of plot plan and the ability to identify equipment and areas on deck. • Assisted with quality checks of welding in new sponson sections, piping fabrication and weld repairs. • Gained significant exposure to both MPI and radiography checks.• Attended Remontowa permit to work course and became competent in completing PTWs.
