Education has long been my greatest passion – in particular, educational equity. I have a lot of energy for it, and get very excited by the prospect of changing traditional approaches to learning to ensure that no student gets left behind. Though I started off studying geology, and worked out in Western Queensland for a while, when I returned to the Gold Coast in 1985, I delved straight into teaching. For over 15 years, I worked as a classroom teacher during the week and spent weekends and evenings tutoring children who needed extra support or were highly motivated to achieve better results. During this time, I tutored thousands of students, many of whom I still bump into today! By working with small groups and delivering personalised learning, I found I was able to have a massive impact. This realisation, combined with the increasing demand for my services, compelled me to set up my own company: Mighty Minds. With a team of dedicated staff, who are either also teachers or creatives studying highly specialised subjects, we started working collaboratively with schools to improve academic outcomes for Queensland students.Fast-forward to the present day, and Mighty Minds has provided more than 700 schools around Australia with tailored learning support. Though we believe all students deserve individualised education that supports and extends their learning as they need it, we also recognise that teachers face limitations in the classroom that make this difficult to deliver. This is especially true given the current climate, where many teachers have been forced to take their classrooms into remote learning spaces. We know that individualised learning is invaluable for students, so we aim to make it practical for teachers to deliver. To do so, we take a whole-school approach, collaborating with teachers, parents and admin staff to ensure everyone is on the same page. If we don’t have something a school needs, our resources team can create it. Our processes and results are transparent, and we are committed to building a strong, cooperative and productive relationship with Australian schools.I also love feedback! I’m keen to hear the educational concerns of your school, and will make it my priority to provide solutions and foster a culture of inspired learning. Please reach out if you want to collaborate or have any great ideas about how we can help better support your school or your child’s at-home learning environment.Outside of education, I love travelling with my wife, walking my dogs, hanging out with my wonderful kids and playing golf.
