About Michael Alonso

I am passionate about developing innovative therapies that harness the power of the immune system to fight cancer. As a Scientific Co-founder and Sr Vice President of Research at Bolt Biotherapeutics, I lead a talented and diverse team of scientists and researchers who are committed to advancing our pipeline of novel immune-stimulatory antibody conjugates (ISACs) for the treatment of solid tumors. In my current role, I oversee the preclinical research and development of our ISACs, from target identification through IND-enabling activities. I also enjoy collaborating with cross-functional teams, external partners, and key opinion leaders to ensure the scientific rigor and quality of our programs. I leverage my skills in immunology, oncology, biotechnology, and molecular and cellular biology to design and execute studies that demonstrate the safety and efficacy of our ISACs in various animal models and human tissues. I am proud to have contributed to the filing of multiple patents, publications, and INDs for our lead and pipeline candidates.

Listed skills include Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Cell Biology, and 17 others.

Scientific Co-Founder & Director Of Preclinical Research

Redwood City, California, Us

We set out to develop novel immunotherapeutics designed to eliminate metastatic disease based on groundbreaking technology from Stanford University that we published in Nature, Cell and JCI insight. These studies demonstrated that simultaneous delivery of anti-tumor antibody and immune adjuvant elicits powerful anti-tumor immunity that eliminates primary tumors and metastatic disease. We subsequently discovered that covalent attachment of an immune stimulant to an anti-tumor antibody dramatically increased anti-tumor immunity and could be delivered as a single Boltbody therapeutic. We filed IP, raised the Series A and set up the framework needed to select a lead for clinical development.

Aug 2016 - Sep 2017

Manager, Cellular Immunity Laboratory

Palo Alto, Ca, Us

My studies at Stanford University utilized bioinformatics technology to better understand the cellular distribution of complex tissues. We actively pursued mechanisms that governed the formation of tolerogenic dendritic cell subsets and strategies for converting immunosuppressive dendritic cells into proinflammatory dendritic cells capable of eliciting robust anti-tumor immunity. As a manager, I supervised a 22 member laboratory with Dr. Engleman and helped define our experimental and regulatory strategies. I also participated in personnel decisions, wrote grants, edited manuscripts and ensured the compliance of our laboratory with all University, State and Federal regulations.

Mar 2013 - 2016

Lead Scientist And Business Development

Organ-I

Organ-i presented an exciting opportunity to leverage my expertise to develop and commercialize several renal transplant diagnostic products. I was responsible for overseeing the product development roadmap and coordinating with our legal team to ensure a robust patent portfolio. I also managed relationships with consultants and collaborations with leading academic and industry partners. These responsibilities included the presentation of results to CEO’s and VP’s of Research at leading Biotechnology firms. Lastly, I jointly identified a small set of serum biomarkers that distinguish chronic rejection from acute rejection with Dr. Sigdel. I am proud to say that renal transplant patients should benefit from our efforts in the near future.

2011 - Nov 2012

Ph.D. Candidate

Stanford, Ca, Us

My research at Stanford demonstrated that activated T cells dictate the nature of the immune response by instructing monocytes to differentiate into specialized dendritic cell subsets. We defined this pathway during psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and transplant rejection. We also defined several strategies to deplete inflammatory dendritic cells and achieve immune quiescence. Mentor: Edgar Engleman

Aug 2006 - 2011

Project Leader

Champaign, Il, Us

My studies in Dr. Greenough's laboratory pioneered the feasibility of delivering gene therapy to Fragile X patients in preclinical models. While the delivery was successful, the mice mounted an immune response against the newly translated protein that limited the effectiveness of genetic therapy. As such, I went to Stanford University to expand my knowledge of the body's immune system.

Jun 2003 - Jul 2006

Research Assistant

Champaign, Il, Us

Evaluated the effectiveness of fungicides on a devastating fungus linked to the Irish Potato Famine in Dr. Mohammad Babadoost's laboratory. These studies uncovered several candidates for the elimination of Phytophthora Blight.
