About Mo Chen

My expertise is in 3D cell culture and organoid culture, with a particular focus on using olfactory ensheathing cells (OEC) to repair nervous system damage. I have worked with both discovery and translational research projects. I have also worked on identifying natural products that enhance glia viability using high throughput screening. Based on these experiences, I developed a system for purification of glia from primary mouse culture using a combination method of 3D cell culture and drug treatment. With this purification system, the purity of glia (olfactory ensheathing cells) has been significantly increased from 8% to 90%.I submitted two patent applications. One is for a 3D cell culture system (Naked liquid marbles 3D Cell culture system, Provisional patent number 2017904456), another one is a device for 3D cell culture analysis (Apparatus for and methods of removing fluid from a cell culture, Provisional patent number 2017904064). Most importantly, I have invented a unique nerve bridge 3D cell culture technology and a patent application is currently being prepared for this. The critical advantage of this new nerve bridge technology is that it contains only cells and does not use scaffolds, fibres or supporting gels. I have used this technology to produce 3 cm long nerve bridges composed of cells purified from human nasal biopsies. My ground-breaking three-dimensional (3D) cell culture technology has shown immense promise in the area of spinal cord injury repair, with the potential impact of the technology recognized by the Research Australia Discovery Award 2020-2021.
