I created a greenfield plastics manufacturing business in an emerging economy using my analytical skills from tax consulting and my manufacturing experience in new product development and process improvement. I developed highly customized plant, machinery, and processes in collaboration with German and Taiwanese technology partners to drastically reduce the average production cost. In the last 7 years, I grew my business by more than 500%, and developed a global customer/supplier base spanning Europe, the US, the Middle East, and East Asia. I have gained a deep insight into all the fascinating functions of a business across its setup, growth, and maturation stages. I was responsible for the strategy, product innovation, business development, planning, and management of operations and growth of the business. With strategic marketing efforts, I determine the product mix and production targets. I ascertain the resources required to achieve the production targets and then allocate short-term and long-term resources to ensure efficient production and shipment. As an entrepreneur, I balance various functions including corporate strategy, production finance, implementing developmental projects, accounting and finance, procurement and managing customer relationships. My company has grown into a diverse, multi-lingual, inclusive workforce of industry specialists, engineers, marketing professionals, accountants, and dedicated workers.

I was responsible for process improvement and new product development for a manufacturer of industrial packaging products for Pharma and Consumer Products customers. I was able to transfer my knowledge of data-based, multidimensional analysis from tax consulting to seemingly unrelated areas such as an overhaul of production facilities to meet international standards. The project involved both technical and aesthetic plant-level upgrades. These changes led to gaining 3 large pharmaceutical accounts and dramatically improving quality audit scores. I also directly managed litigation related to tax holiday claim that was favorably decided by Hon. Supreme Court in 2018, resulting in tax savings pertaining to ten tax years.I valued the general management perspective that I developed during this role which inspired me to subsequently start my own business.

I supervised a team of tax professionals to successfully deliver assignments for companies like British Telecom, British Airways, Motorola, Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei. In the process, I found opportunities to make an impact both internally and externally. One of my internal accomplishments was to design a new system that reduced the tax credit comparison process from 7 days to 1 day. This system was subsequently adopted by other EY teams. An external impact was generated by developing relationships with industry leading clients and working on unprecedented projects. One project for a British client involved an in-depth analysis of various international tax treaties and subsequently identifying the most efficient holding structure which resulted in significant savings. I received two Accelerated Career Path promotions to become one of the youngest Senior Tax Consultants in my cohort. My work focused on managing engagements that involved tax audit proceedings, advising on complex international and domestic tax or regulatory matters, and producing compliance deliverables.

The most interesting part of my role as a Tax Consultant was the extensive research I conducted on multiple conflicting national and international case laws. This research enabled me to develop a tax position that was chosen by the EY Knowledge Centre for use across EY India. Realizing the importance of disseminating this information, I produced the weekly newsletter ‘EY Aviation Tax and Regulatory Alert’, the first of its kind. This inspired the creation of other industry-specific tax newsletters within EY. While I was able to successfully execute assignments for multiple clients, I was most intrigued by situations that required a deviation from the standard academic approach.
