About Moeen Mostafavi

Out of box thinker with a demonstrated history of working in both academia and industry. Passionate about applications of statistical and computational methods in complex systems. I apply machine learning tools in Computational Social Science problems. The challenge of working with various audiences is an inspiring part of my research. I developed diverse interdisciplinary projects involving collaborators in Systems Engineering, Political Science, Kinesiology, Nursing, Facilities Management, Economics, Sociology, and Data Science. Through this experience, I have become more creative by exploring different data sources and communicating solutions with collaborators.I enjoy extending ideas and tools of one science to other sciences. In my point of view, the core logical structure of sciences is similar to each other using their own tailor-made methods to solve problems. It is usually possible to generalize methods of other sciences in special fields. This is why interdisciplinary researches are always inspiring to me. I experienced working in other areas such as economics, Computer Science, and Sociology. I believe there is no boundary among different disciplines while working on practical decision-making projects.- Initiated a policy-making model in economic systems with expectation terms. In that project, cooperated with researchers with different backgrounds including Economics, Industrial engineering, and control systems. As a result, a new framework for modeling expectation terms in macroeconomic models was developed.- I led an award-winning capstone team that partnered with Facilities Management (FM) to develop a training program to improve safety and sustainability of the fleet resulting in several national awards for UVA's FM fleet. Namely, their "Mindful Driver Training" program won the Best Special Project award from Green Fleets Award and led to UVA being ranked one of the "Best Green Fleets in North America" by the National Association of Fleet Administrators. - Despite the difficulties of accurately conveying emotions, nonverbal communication, like messaging, has become a dominant mode of communication. My recent research explores how emotional states can be defined, initiated, and tracked in the context of online messaging.
