Efficient management and leadership boils down to knowing the overall needs of an organization and the individual needs of its people and translating those needs into a common agenda. Mogens calls it positive alignment. Herein lies his unique ability to translate complex theories and policies into meaningful ways for people to understand, apply and succeed. Spending the formative years of the career in the microcosm of the ships has given Mogens lots of insights to the mechanisms of an organization. In these defined and very demanding environments, complex and diverse tasks have to be distributed and coordinated between highly specialized subject matter experts, and it’s easy to observe how work-as-imagined deteriorates to work-as-done when an executive guideline trickles down the hierarchy from the board room to the sharp end. Throughout his career, Mogens has been a motivator who ignites the fire of creativity, innovation and co-operation of those around him and felt most significantly by the teams he has managed. His experience as the Head of the Danish Coastal Rescue Services has demonstrated to him that no problem should move further up the organization than the first level of competence that can solve it. Empowering the right people in doing the right job constitutes an efficient operation where people feel like they are in the right place. As a result, you have happy people around you and the great thing about happiness is - it spreads quickly. Nothing satisfies him more than when the goals of the organization aligns with the personal motivation of the individual team members set to achieve it. When asked what kept Mogens in the maritime industry so long, he responds “ship happens”. Shipping isn’t really about plotting the course and monitoring the oil pressure. It is setting a team up to perform efficiently. What he means is that, when we are put up against what appears to be insurmountable challenges; leadership and teamwork will have a direct impact on people (not numbers on a spreadsheet), that is when you bring out the best in others and yourself. Mogens thrives in environments where he can mobilize people and set all the ships sailing in the same direction to reach their common goal.
