I am a first-gen college student on the pre-medicine track. I was born and raised in Aleppo, Syria and moved to the U.S in 7th grade with enough English to introduce myself. It took me a few years to adjust to the culture and understand that my daily basic needs were being met and that I could start thinking more in the long term. I went to high school in Arkansas where I held leadership positions such as captain of the JV soccer team, leader of the spirit group, senior class representative and fundraiser coordinator for HOSA club. Some defining accomplishments from this period include:Raising about $15K for students interested in medicine to fund field trips to further educate themselves on the various career paths in this spaceGoing from barely speaking any English to emceeing Pep Rallies in front of an audience of 3,000+ students and faculty members Tutoring 30+ peers in the maths and sciences to help them level up their knowledge and grades in areas of school where I excelledI am interested in medicine because although I showcased an early aptitude for mathematics, anatomy and physiology, and chemistry, that wasn't enough for me to decide to commit the next 12 years of my life to the mastery of an ever-changing field like medicine. I have a deep desire to challenge myself to solve what is seemingly unsolvable, while at the same time bringing more empathy and understanding to patient care, which will help humanize a field that can sometimes feel extremely clinical.Much like my decision to pursue medicine comes from an altruistic place, throughout my life I have tried to always look back and help others, especially those who might be on a similar journey as me. For this reason, I have valued mentorship and been a mentor and a tutor to many students in high school and University. Outside of helping students become more well versed in subjects like Algebra, Calculus, Chemistry, O-Chem, and Cell Biology to name a few areas, one of the biggest things that I try to help my mentees grasp is to ground themselves in the present moment. This was one of the most important lessons that I learned throughout my life experiences, since the past can't be changed, and the future is unpredictable. The present moment is the only thing we can experience.
