Under the supervision of Dr. VeiskaramiSeveral methods have been developed for analysis and design of retaining walls. The mechanism or the geometry of failure is well governed by physical properties of the soil and has a great influence on the basic relations. A good assumption for the failure mechanism and its geometry will provide us with a proper and accurate result. In this study, the coefficient of passive earth pressure calculated with particle image velocimetry (PIV) by manufacturing physical modeling equipment to test a retaining wall moving towards the retained soil in order to assess the theoretical assumptions with experimental observations. Results were compared with the results of numerical analyses based on theoretical approaches. Results indicated that if the geometry of failure is predicted by PIV methods, a better estimate of the coefficient of earth pressure can be obtained.
