Biomass Valorization: I worked on the conversion of Lignocellulosic biomass to produce one of the most valuable platform molecules, HMF. I tested different catalysts including zeolites, modified zeolites, and Metal Organic Franeworks (MOFs) for an optimized production of HMF compared to the conventional homogeneous catalysts. The most effiecient catalyst was UiO66-(COOH)2 which yielded 39% under 3 hours reaction time. The catalyst has shown a decent reusability without losing its acidity. The future aspects of this project includes but not limited to: Tuning the acidity of the MOFs using new modulators, metalation of the MOFs to optimize Bronsted-to-Lewis acid ratio, and finally a post treatment of the MOFs to enhance the catalytic activity. During the site visit to Sibline, I have applied the knowledge gained in the physical and chemical laboratory for quality control of the cement and bricks produced on a daily basis. Moreover, I have passed through the whole mechanical and chemical process starting from the crushers, to the mills and kilns, and finally ending the journey in the packaging department.

During my internship in Dr. Arij’s lab, I developed an application called “iZebra” to communicate with the back bag for wave file transfer. The aim behind this was to study the stuttering of zebra finches through bone conduction signal transfer.

I worked as a member in Dr. Yehya’s team. The projects that we were investigating are the following:-Bio-gas production as a renewable energy to replace methane gas. -The reason behind the solidification of sodium acetate in hot packs.-The cooling drop and ice nucleation control of ohase change material (PCM) using magnetic fields that aim for better energy storage in buildings.
