Having an area of 18,900 km2 (1.2 percent of the total area of the country), Tehran accommodates about 21 percent (18 million people) of the total population of Iran. At the same time with 92 percent of urban population in 16 towns and 51 cities, Tehran Province enjoys the highest level of urban dwelling in the country and 44 percent of the industry of the country is in this province.
