I developed an econometric (statistical branch of economics) modeling training programme that was administered to heterogeneous mix of workshop participants representing all the levels of tertiary education. Workshop participants included undergraduates, masters’ students, PhD students, PhD holders and research fellows from the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER). The econometric models were developed using the R programming language, a de facto standard for doing data science.I taught the workshop participants to use R to build linear regression models, specifically linear regression with time series data, panel data and to solve systems of linear equations.The workshop participants were then taught to build models specific to microeconometrics (branch of econometrics that deals with studying the economic behavior of individual entities such as consumers and firms), specifically they were taught to build Generalized Linear Models, to build models involving binary dependent variables, regression models involving count data and to build models involving censored dependent variablesFinally, workshop participants delved deeper into times series analysis. Specifically, the workshop participants were taught to use infrastructure and “naive” methods to analyze time series datasets, to perform classical model-based analysis, to test for the presence of stationarity and unit roots in a time series, to test whether a pair of time series are cointegrated and to test for the presence of structural change in a time series while performing time series regression. I undertook a study of the potential application of Big Data Analytics in the Energy industry, specifically in Oil/Gas and Power sectors. I researched potential use cases in both the upstream and downstream sectors of the Oil and Gas industry. In the Power sector, the potential use cases researched covered Generation, Distribution and Consumption.
