CurrentDuring the height of the pandemic, patients with procedures were being held back as they could not make their way from home to the hospital to have a COVID test done. I had come onboard to Non-Patient Transport at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to transport COVID tests all around the country. The addresses were provided to me by management and then I would have to plan my own route to make sure I get the work done quickly, efficiently and safely. Some routes could go from the hospital in Birmingham to Liverpool, then having to stop in Stoke on the way back.On a day to day basis I interacted with young individuals up to the elderly, if they were healthy or extremely vulnerable. I would meet people from different cultures, environments and life situations, this helped advance my interactions with the general public especially when patients did not understand how this procedure would work I would help explain what happens and how it happens. This was satisfying that in the end when a patient who was extremely confused, anxious and scared was feeling calm, comforted and happier with what was going on after I had explained and spoke to them. I feel that speaking to patients on a personal level brought me closer to them in bringing them some comfort and being a happy face which helped calm patients nerves.
