Senior Airside Controller

Current

Bahrain

This management role proactively manages, on a shift basis, all ground operation activities of Bahrain Airport Services, ensuring a safe, compliant and both operationally and financially efficient delivery. In my current role Senior Airside Controller, I am responsible for all airside activates, planning manpower for the airside operation, with seven sections under my command on a shift basis (aircraft dispatch, load control, operation control centre, airside team leaders, airside equipment operator and handler, baggage services, motor transport), managing shift activities, monitoring, directing and reporting to the management, and representing the company management during the scheduled shifts or on other occasions as and when required. During my time in this role, COVID-19 has impacted aviation, with working from -home and social-distancing, as well as erratic staffing availability, complicating an already complex ground service operation. Recently, the new airport has opened, so this has necessitated establishing new work protocols, inducting new staff, and supporting the team effort to realise the Kingdom’s vision of a truly international airport.

This supervisory role oversees the allocations of staff and dispatch. In this position I was constantly monitoring the operations (flight schedules, staff movements and performance, equipment and facilities) to ensure that flights were dispatched in a safe, secure and timely manner that satisfied both internal and external customer requirements. Includes allocating flights prior to aircraft arrival, and supervising the work to ensure proper and prompt execution.• Brief subordinates on airlines procedures and amendment thereto.• Responsible for overseeing flights, planning for new flights while monitoring current ones.• Drive and be knowledgeable about all aircraft servicing equipment as required• Monitor and advise the crew of changes affecting safety of flights • Effectively communicate with relevant personnel on the Ramp, in Passenger Services, Cargo, Catering, Transportation and Line Maintenance as required.

Aircraft Dispatcher Co-Ordinator

Bahrain

This position required the allocation of staff and equipment to ensure that flights are dispatched in a safe, secure and timely manner. This was largely a co-ordination role that necessitated monitoring the flight schedules, staff movements and performance, equipment and facilities, with the aim of meeting both internal and external customer requirements.Responsibilities• Develop and implement daily staff allocation rosters and overall staffing plans in a way that is fair and equitable • Direct and manage dispatch personnel, making re-allocations to cover shortages caused by technical delays, re-routing, weather, etc.•Write a variety of reports, from progress reports to reports for investigations; make presentations as and when required• Liaise with internal and external customers on an on-going basis, developing the networks and good-will necessary for effective operations in the dynamic airport environment• Estimate the resources and people needed to achieve key performance indicators• Draft proposals, and recommend subsequent changes where necessary to solve problems• Negotiate with other departments and managers for the acquisition of required resources and services• Analyse results, troubleshoot problem areas, identify potential risks and devise contingency plans to proactively manage the situation• Conduct reviews and create reports with recommendationsKey Achievements• Developed a paper for senior management with a proposal to enhance staff retention• Identified the root cause of communication issues and possible solutions for senior management• Represented staff concerns to senior management, acting as an advocate and assisting with win-win resolution• Inducting new staff• Coaching and mentoring to build capacity as part of succession planning for the area• On-job training for new requirements as Bahrain Airport became more internationally focused• Enhanced leadership skills and knowledge through participation in two development programmes

Oct 2013 - Jan 2017

Aircraft Dispatcher

Bahrain

This position required dispatching the aircraft in a safe, secure and timely manner. Aircraft dispatchers liaise with many different teams within the airport, airlines, and other internal departments working in ground services. Dispatchers make sure that any work undertaken to prepare a flight is done to the correct standards and within set timeframe's and have the final say as to whether an aircraft can depart. They deal with any unexpected problems and make sure that they are resolved as quickly and efficiently as possible.Key Achievements• In 2012, I was seconded to work on the re-engineering of the traffic department, a project designed to increase the quality and the efficiency and effectiveness of delivery, and this allowed me to demonstrate a high level of analytical skills. • The best example of analytical thinking is the suggestion that I made to baggage area services and ramp operations services to implement a Baggage Reconciliation System to avoid the large number of over-carried and left behind baggage. • I also was on a special project for half a year as part of the drive to gain quality compliance with international standards and this involved mapping on the computer the processes of ramp services from A-Z in order to enhance efficiencies and to revise policies. • The Project: “Re-Engineering of the Traffic Department”, has allowed me to develop a really good understanding of operational activities in this and other sections of BAS operations. • The Standard Operations Procedure (SOP) Project that I was also engaged in over 2013 further enhanced my knowledge of systems and requirements necessary to safely manage the operational activities of the relevant departments.
