Initially hired as a performance tuning specialist, to propose and implement performance enhancements within the existing SQL Server 2014 AlwaysOn environment hosted on Azure IaaS VMs. This role included the additional responsibilities of managing the SQL Server estate, performing routine database administrative tasks and providing 24/7 support of these critical financial databases.Upon completion of an estate review, work was undertaken to identify the worst performing queries in respect to IO and CPU utilisation. This involved index redesign and T-SQL refactoring to maximise query efficiency. Performance metrics were taken and compared for individual queries in addition to the overall performance baseline.Key projects for which I designed, developed and implemented included delivering a full migration from SQL Server 2014 to SQL Server 2016 in the Azure IaaS environment. This involved building a new multi-node SQL Server 2016 AlwaysOn Availability Group in Azure, complete with all configuration scripted in PowerShell to form a DSC standard. Features implemented with the migration to SQL Server 2016 included temporal tables, to facilitate the incremental ETL of source data tables and to provide CDC.It was also my responsibility to manage the existing Tableau Server estate in addition to developing further dashboards and workbooks for analysis by both C-level and operational staff. In addition to Tableau, I introduced the business to Power BI for which it is used extensively in KPI reporting, alert monitoring and also advanced financial forecasting models. The ingestion and manipulation of the data for the financial forecasting was completed in PowerShell using OLEDB providers.SSRS was also used extensively to deliver reports to the business in an accessible way via the web service. Developed queries and corresponding reports that connected to SQL Server, PostgreSQL and Amazon RedShift.

Working within the Managed Services support team to provide over 35 clients with 24x7 support, issue escalation and project resourcing. This operation involved the management of 550 businesses’ critical instances and over 8000 databases with versions of SQL Server, from 2005 to 2014. These instances leveraged many different technologies including availability groups, replication (merge/transactional), mirroring, log-shipping, partitioning, multi-subnet fail over clusters, etc.Day-to-day duties involved incident-resolution of SCOM alerts generated in response to both standard and custom monitors, responding to customer requests in a timely fashion and resolving their reported database issues (e.g. slow performance) by performing detailed analysis of the full server. This included instance and database stack error diagnoses to establish root cause before suggesting and implementing resolutions. Query Performance was a commonly-resolved issue, exploiting Profiler and SQL Sentry.Within this role I have also performed dedicated engineering work such as the installation and configuration of new SQL Server 2014 instances with respect to industry best practices. Proposing database improvements, server upgrades, and patch installations with complete implementation plans, was also routine.

Initially working within the Projects and Engineering Subdivision, and later promoted to the Daily Operations "Business As Usual" Team to resolve DBA resource shortfalls.Have cooperated in cross-team projects to deliver critical DBA applications for global use. I have developed for application support teams. For example, the creation of an automated self-service database refresh utility application using PowerShell interacting with NetBackup software. In addition, I developed a GUI PowerShell application to automate the routine Windows Security Patching cycle. Oracle APEX self-service applications were also developed to minimise unwanted tickets/DBA callouts by automating the process of disabling monitoring agents and maintenance jobs during downtime.As a member of the Fidelity SQL Server Operations Team, I worked alongside colleagues in the UK, India and China to support mission-critical 24/7 Financial databases within a large and diverse estate. This database estate included SQL Server versions 2000 to 2014, multiple domains, SharePoint, SQL replication, mirroring, SRDF, etc. My team responds to high severity incidents, to expedite change requests and the resolution of service requests (all with respect to ITIL standards). Regular support of production databases for out-of-hours 24/7 on-call rota service provision, and performance of routine weekend database changes.

Worked as part of the front line desktop services support team and was responsible for computer maintenance, Active Directory Profile Management, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Support and Provisioning Telecommunication Solutions at Fidelity Investment Services. I was also involved in the global migration of users from obsolete Windows XP systems to later versions of Microsoft Windows. This entailed configuring virtual desktops, setting up the Active Directory user profiles and the configuration and deployment of thin-client hardware.
