Design of an Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) capable of navigating inland lakes to record hydrilla weed concentrations and deploy herbicide accordinglyAn ASV equipped with SONAR imaging creates acoustic data maps to track monoecious hydrilla concentrations.• Under the guidance of Dr. Scott Ferguson of NC State, commisioned by United Phosporus, Inc.(UPI), a leading supplier of agro chemicals.• GPS tracking is enabled in order for the ASV to hit the scheduled waypoints and for course correction if needed; redundancy is provided by means of RF control as well.• Exploration of the different types of boat architecture and proposing the best physical design elements based on requirements of the client.• Performing sizing of various architecture elements and creating of 3D design through CATIA and analysis through ANSYS.• Construction of a functional prototype and testing of steering, propulsion, navigational and data tracking elements. • The PID control tuning of the catamaran prototype was done on Lake Raleigh by creating way-point based paths on the Mission Planner software, to identify ease of steering issues and improve adherence to way-points. Several strategies including use of jump-points, skewing the turning lines and increasing the acceptance radius and adjustment for wind. Preliminary tests were first carried for a rover on land before exporting them to the water.

After several trials with different configurations, a combined linear and rotary arrangement assisted by robots was finalized, which resulted in time savings of 8 seconds per PLV. Given that the company requirements were for 1000 PLV’s per day, this resulted in a savings of nearly 2.2 hrs per day for the company.
