My name is Mo Harper-Desir and I am an accomplished organizer, with a passion for social justice and values working in organizations where people integrate their knowledge and ideas into the arts, culture and humanities. As a Black change maker, I hold an appreciation for healthy work environments and scheduling that allows for peace, reflection and rest. Currently, I have an active career in digital media, racial education, community building and communications. I freelance as an artist and consultant through my micro-business, Mo HD Creates, and work in Administration & Project Development at Access Humboldt. I am a first generation Haitian & White, Black, Queer, arts activist, and regard myself as a caretaker to my community. Through my lived experiences I offer high levels of multicultural competence and a glimpse into the life of multiple intersectional identities. As an artist I actively create using multimedia visual arts, film, Hip-Hop, theater, dance and poetry to tell stories and implement change. I aim to produce and support radical free art, and to create inclusive, truthful messaging that is accessible to everyone. Creating uplifting and positive reflections of marginalized identities through storytelling is my passion. As an activist I strive to create and sustain the necessary spaces for marginalized identities to grow and prosper. This is best represented through my work in leading the non-profit organization, Black Humboldt, which I co-founded in response to the overwhelming lack of Black and BIPOC representation in my home of Humboldt County, California. Within this role I focus on creating and supporting events, activities, youth, business, and bringing resources to the local Black community. My life’s work was born out of my love for mixed media, a passion for social justice and an interest in developing alternative methods of bringing change into the world. My BA degree is in Arts Management & Education, with a certificate in Social Justice Leadership, from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst and my AA is in Liberal Arts, with a concentration on Media Production, from Greenfield Community College. Professionally, I have grown to support strong work ethic, time management skills, decolonized work practices, and the promotion of an able, healthy, and communicative culture. I value collaboration, reimagining the status quo, and believe in dismantling power hierarchies within work spaces. I respect other opinions and find importance in listening to those that differ from my own.
