During my internship, I had the opportunity to contribute to the development of a test station for detection and verification of 14 metallic inserts in an injection-molded plastic component i.e., battery tray. The metal inserts are manually inserted into the mold during each injection cycle and hence, can be missed because of human error. My primary focus was on the design aspect of the test station, which involved utilizing CAD software SolidWorks to create the design of each individual component including the entire assembly. The CAD geometry of the battery tray was used as a reference. Key Responsibilities:-Collaborated with a multidisciplinary team of engineers to conceptualize and develop the test station, ensuring its functionality aligned with project objectives.-Conducted thorough research on the requirements and specifications for detecting metallic inserts within plastic parts, identifying the need for inductive sensors.-Utilized SolidWorks to design the test station layout, incorporating inductive sensors at strategic points to accurately detect the presence of metallic inserts.-Created Drawings of individual components as well as assembly.-Created Bill-of-Materials(BOM) for the entire test station.Achievements:-Successfully contributed to the design and development of a robust test station, demonstrating improved accuracy in detecting metallic inserts within plastic parts.-Through this internship experience, I gained valuable hands-on experience in CAD design, project collaboration, and problem-solving within a real-world engineering context. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such an innovative project and look forward to applying the skills and knowledge gained to future endeavors in the field of mechanical engineering.
