Tintern Abbey

I was part of a small team of Custodians at Tintern Abbey. My main responsibilities involved: selling site admission tickets and products in the visitor centre, conducting site checks; and helping to maintain financial records from the visitor centre. As a Custodian, I communicated on a daily basis with people of all ages and from many parts of the world, and greatly valued hearing about their experiences with the site. I also observed people’s shopping habits and compared sales numbers to figure out the best in-store display solutions.As part of my own personal development, I pursued my interest in heritage marketing by shadowing Cadw’s Marketing team. I assisted by editing press release drafts, composing tweets for the site’s Twitter account, and responding to comments for the site’s TripAdvisor page. I also spent a summer helping out Cadw's Commcerial team, which enabled me to learn about the Commercial team's booking processes and engagement in event planning, as well as acting as a liaison between the Tintern Abbey site and Cadw headquarters. I had the great opportunity to shadow the Council's archaeologist, John Oxley, for the second half of the placement module for my MA degree. During my placement, I assisted him by digitizing and updating York’s Historic Environment Record and GIS map. I also researched and plotted the locations of archaeology in York, such as the boundaries of former graveyards, and contributed evidence for a planning permission case based on intrusive and non-intrusive archaeological surveys.

I updated social media profiles for Triskele Consulting and clients using Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Hootsuite by researching their audiences and creating content for them. I worked at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport on an eight-week contract for students, funded by the Ontario Provincial Government. As Archaeological Data Assistant, I worked with my colleague, also a student, to initiate and secure Archaeological Data Sharing Agreements with planning authorities across Ontario and send them GIS data. We also helped our supervisor, Robert von Bitter, to update the Ministry's GIS map based on data from archaeological site reports.
