Daily is a small company working on providing WebRTC as a service. Since joining, I’ve been leading the REST API/backend team, where we’ve been focused on adding features and improving the service’s performance and resilience through observability, optimization and security hardening.Recently, I’ve been writing a Python SDK to make it easy to build AI-enabled bots for WebRTC meetings.Key achievements:* Found and fixed multiple security issues and brought security practices up to modern standards.* Added new API functionality to address the scaling requirements of our largest customers* Found, fixed and added monitoring for performance and scaling issues related to database design and code implementation* Made dozens of improvements to our API endpoints based on customer requests* Gave company-wide presentations on topics such as security, AI and interviewing

At Mailchimp, I worked on the REST API team. Mailchimp’s REST API supported a multitude of uses, some of which were very high traffic and saturated with legacy “quirks”. Much of my work there centered on improving performance, in addition to addressing some large security problems.Before joining the REST API team, I worked on automations. Again, this was a complicated legacy system with lots of strange corners and undocumented-but-relied-upon behavior. I found and fixed some significant problems through observability and code analysis.I helped revamp Mailchimp’s interviewing process, including creating and leading training sessions for engineers.Key Achievements:* Performed forensic analysis on security incidents, explained technical details to legal team* Led work with a contractor to redesign our API documentation; when the project was complete, our documentation and SDKs were auto-generated from Swagger files produced by our API servers* Found and fixed long-standing and expensive bugs in Mailchimp’s automations product* Created and led interview training program for Mailchimp engineering

I joined Slack to help the company scale its product from supporting teams of sizes in the low thousands to teams in the size of hundreds of thousands. This was vital to growing Slack’s ARR for a successful IPO. We were able to meet these scaling demands, while maintaining Slack’s fast performance, for a launch of the “Enterprise GRID” project in 2017. This project involved changes at all levels of the stack, primarily focused on performance improvements (including algorithmic improvements, query optimization, memory footprint reduction, etc) and broad architectural changes.Key Achievements* Rearchitected Slack’s data model to support huge teams* Participated in on-call rotations

I wrote code that collected performance data from web clients, sent it to beacon servers to be collected in our data stack, and worked on visualizations using Hadoop and Etsy’s internal tools.

Led team was focused on building tools for our customers who led “Etsy Teams”. This was a really fun mix of building software, building a team, and building a culture of talking directly to the people who used the software we were building. I hired 3 people, and we shipped features on Android, iOS and web, in addition to giving talks at conferences for our customers.

Added various seller-oriented features, including a "hot listing" detector.

I worked on a few teams at Google, but I was generally focused on real-time communication. I started on the Google Talk Windows client, adding features to get us to parity with the big IM clients of the time, then moved onto work on a shared web client to enable Google Talk in various Google web properties such as Orkut and iGoogle. While working on Google Talk, I started a 20% project to enable running sandboxed javascript inside the chat window, for applications like casual games. This 20% project turned into my full-time project, building a precursor to WebSocket on App Engine. While productionizing this service, I was also Tech Lead for the SMTP and XMPP services on App Engine; the SMTP project required significant abuse detection and prevention.I was very involved in hiring at Google; I was a member of the hiring committee for 6.5 of my 7 years there, and led dozens of interview training sessions across many offices.Key Achievements* Built and shipped App Engine’s “Channel API” (a precursor to websockets) from a 20% project* Led the XMPP and SMTP features for App Engine, reduced spam sent from App Engine by a few orders of magnitude.* Added Google Talk to the Orkut and iGoogle web sites* Added Orkut integration to the native Google Talk client, doubled MAU* Taught dozens of interview training sessions in multiple offices, and served on hiring committee

Worked on core indexing algorithms and performance for Windows Shared Indexer. Cut query time in half for sorted queries. Added internationalization, performance and indexing features to MSN Desktop Search 2.5 and 2.6. Wrote UI for battery-saving features in Windows Vista.

Wrote recipe recommendation engine. Wrote Apache extension to improve performance while browsing recipe reviews. Wrote trust model for reviews. Wrote recipe- and user-ranking algorithms. Wrote palm app to browse shopping lists. Participated in day-to-day site reliability and customer service.

Modified Outlook to accept generic data sources. Wrote file-system namespace which enabled rich file browsing in Outlook. Improved Outlook performance, especially against POP servers.

Wrote an import manager for the DOS and Mac (system 6) versions of Timeslips. Primary developer for Timeslips 5 upgrade.
