I am a geographer and a biologist, with an interest in understanding the impact of environmental shocks on food systems and on markets. My interests are smallholder agricultural development, sustainability and climate change adaptation, communicating knowledge and information across scientific disciplines, bridging the public and private sectors, and understanding how information gets from data producers to data users.I focus on conducting research on how climate variability as measured by satellite remote sensing affects health outcomes and food security in the developing world. As we become more aware of the causes and impact of climate change, we need to understand how climate variability affects the poor in agricultural regions. Food security is affected both by natural resource availability as well as national and international food prices. Examining how climate interacts with the broader food system, markets and government policies is central to understanding how climate data can most be of use. Recently, I've been focused on developing new satellite remote sensing-based information data products that will support decision making for farmers, agri-business and governments in their efforts to improve the productivity of small farmers. These efforts are being implemented in both low and high-income countries, and are meant to be used in information and communication technologies (ICTs) at a variety of scales.
