I was one of about 12 Program Leaders for groups of 8-15 year old children. I worked 40 hours a week, coaching 3 different groups of about 30 children that each met 2 or 3 times per week. I also assisted in the office when I wasn’t leading a program, and helped to lead field trips every Friday. My job was to instruct and accompany the children I coach in making lifestyle changes in exercise and nutrition. Even more importantly, I helped to make them feel empowered and confident in themselves. Everyday I would work with the children outside to build cardio, strength, sport and swimming skills. We would also have nutrition lessons in the garden. I learned to handle unpredictable situations calmly and creatively. I built teamwork skills, leadership skills, public speaking skills and most importantly I learned how to handle unpredictable situations calmly and rationally.
