I have always been someone who embraces adventure and enjoys getting to experience new things. During my undergraduate studies at Hastings College, I took the initiative to partner with Indiana University in their teaching abroad program. This led to my three month long student teaching experience in Canberra, Australia where I got to not only work with a math department there, but also got to explore the country with field trips put on by other departments. I was able to be fully immersed in a new culture, engaging in new relationships and embracing students' lived experiences within my teaching. A couple summers before student teaching, I travelled to Europe with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to host sports camps for students in different countries. There I was able to truly live life with these people who lived in completely different cultures than myself. We communicated, played, laughed, and did life with each other, even when we did not speak the same language. Then shortly after graduating from Hastings College, I was able to travel to Finland with a few of my teacher friends to engage with teachers there to see what their experience in the field was like. We saw the importance they place on exploring and playing in the process of learning. Not only do I embrace these adventures, but I have been the one seeking them out. I want to be pushed out of my comfort zone, to try new things, and to get to do life with people from all different backgrounds. Each of these experiences has taught me to be flexible, innovative, caring, relational, adventurous, and much more. I still seek those opportunities to learn from every person I meet and embrace adventure in whatever comes next.
