As part of Friends of the Earth's Climate-Friendly Food team, I support our federal policy work to strengthen federal oversight of factory farms and redirect resources towards more sustainable food production.

Richmond, Virginia, United States

As Virginia state director, I promoted the Humane Society of the United States' policy priorities at the state level through both grassroots organizing and direct lobbying efforts, and led and supported key advocates in Virginia. I also served as the director of the Humane Society Legislative Fund's Virginia PAC, where I assisted with fundraising, developing and maintaining relationships with donors, and identifying candidates to endorse and financially support.

As a staff attorney, I tracked state legislation relating to cats and accountability in animal sheltering, and analyzed for potential impact. I directly advised state and local legislators on relevant bills, engaged in grassroots legislative lobbying and provided testimony to a variety of audiences. I also regularly researched existing and potential legal avenues for furthering protections for cats and accountability in animal sheltering. Finally, I drafted legislative alerts and advocacy updates to supporters, the general public, and other key stakeholders as well as coordinated and mobilized advocates.

My work at Williamson Law + Policy was mostly transactional as well as some civil litigation, primarily focused on corporate, energy and environmental law. I performed legal research and analysis on a variety of issues under both state & federal laws. I also regularly prepared corporate documents including formation documents, amendments and board resolutions, and ensured corporate client compliance with applicable regulations. I assisted with drafting litigation documents including complaints, briefs and motions, helped prepare for hearings, and participated in client calls, depositions, and other aspects of the discovery process. A majority of my work involved assisting the firm as general counsel to a private equity investment corporation that invests in climate & socially conscious projects. In this role, I consistently drafted, reviewed, and revised contracts and non-disclosure agreements.

Within the environmental enforcement division, I performed legal research and prepared memoranda for senior attorneys on a variety of issues under environmental law, property law, torts, and corporate law, among others. I was able to gain experience in site remediation, environmental permitting and regulation. I also assisted with preparing discovery and litigation materials.

During my semester at Defenders of Wildlife, I was able to do a variety of projects. My work included researching and writing memos on a multitude of environmental laws such as the Endangered Species Act, NEPA, FLPMA, the Clean Water Act, as well as many others. I also helped edit a brief for the 4th Circuit, drafted multiple FOIA requests and assisted with litigation materials. I was able to write two notice of intent letters as well as a complaint concerning an Endangered Species Act listing denial. I also worked with the Government Affairs division by researching State Endangered Species Acts and editing/updating a related report.

A majority of my work focused on water policy and research. I researched and prepared a memo concerning state stormwater management policies and the role of urban stormwater retrofits in state management plans. I also assisted the Pennsylvania office to research and write a comment on the Susquehanna River Basin Commission's proposed water management plan. Other projects included legislative and policy research on hydropower’s role in state renewable portfolio standards, research into recent green infrastructure projects in Pennsylvania/how they were implemented and research into FERC's NEPA analysis when approving hydropower licenses.

My work at AWI included researching and drafting comments on behalf of AWI for proposed listings and policies within the Endangered Species Act. I also assisted with Endangered Species Act litigation: I researched and drafted pleadings including a complaint and memorandum in support of a preliminary injunction for a suit involving illegal takings.

Montpelier, Vermont

I monitored conserved lands and reviewed easements to ensure compliance. I also discussed conservation easements with co-holders. Additionally, I wrote environmental assessment reports on the site visitations and was able to observe policy discussions concerning working forests and sustainable energy development on conserved lands that I had reviewed.

I provided support to the civil division; duties included e-filing of summons, chattels, arrest warrants, etc.; scanned documents, mailed summons. I also observed civil court proceedings and mediations.
