Field ManagerMaasai Honey Mar 2016 - May 2017Ololosokwan, Loliondo, TanzaniaI managed and oversaw the beekeeping, office, and production activities at the Maasai Honey field office in Ololosokwan, Tanzania. As a women's empowerment project for underprivileged Maasai women, I worked with both the company staff and women beneficiaries, conducting trainings and developing new products for sale. We worked together to improve and organize the year-round beekeeping schedule at five apiary locations throughout the village. We refined harvesting, processing, and documentation procedures for honey- allowing honey to be tracked from the source to the shelf. I also worked with staff and beneficiaries on the improvement of natural cosmetic products and candles. We replaced ingredients with more sustainable, locally-sourced alternatives, while I conducted trainings on proper production procedures, new natural cosmetics, and the inclusion of local plants in such products. These included soap, skin salves, lip balm, bug repellent, and candles, made with wax from the hives and other locally sourced ingredients. I also worked with a local beekeeper to tour other villages in the region for the purpose of inspecting apiaries and meeting with cooperative beekeeping groups. -
