About Molly J Wick
My research applies mixed methods and community-engaged approaches to study reciprocal relationships between humans and nature, especially as they affect human well-being and change over time. My postdoc research is investigating geospatial indicators for these relationships using an ecosystem services approach in multiple Great Lakes ecosystems. My PhD research investigated how sociodemographic attributes and personal identity influenced relationships with and barriers to accessing a Great Lakes coastal ecosystem. Broadly, my research aims to inform better environmental decision-making for community benefits, especially in the context of equitability and climate change. I bring a diverse interdisciplinary background in environmental science to my research. From 2014-2016, I was a habitat project coordinator for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources in the St. Louis River Area of Concern in Superior, Wisconsin. I managed ecological assessments and habitat restoration projects and worked with partners to secure over $500,000 for restoration and monitoring efforts. I led a wide range of projects including wild rice and conifer restoration, an estuary-wide semi-aquatic mammal survey, acquisition of airborne LiDAR data, a fish passage assessment, invasive species control, and three projects in the Nemadji River watershed: a watershed modeling assessment, a GIS-based habitat assessment, and outreach activities. Following that, I was an ORISE research participant at the EPA Great Lakes Toxicology and Ecology Division (GLTED) in Duluth, Minnesota. In that position, I sampled and analyzed water quality, sediment chemistry, sediment toxicity, benthic macroinvertebrate, phytoplankton, and algal toxin data in Great Lakes’ estuaries, nearshore, and offshore from small boats and large research vessels. I led and published the results of a water quality assessment in the connecting channels, and the development of Deep Lake Explorer, a citizen science tool for analyzing underwater video.
Listed skills include Gis, Field Work, Research, Science, and 26 others.
