About Molly Mackinlay

I lead the Protocol Dev, Product Dev, and Research Dev teams at Protocol Labs. Our work includes protocol design and development for the *IPFS Project* (a peer-to-peer network and protocol designed to make the web faster, safer, and more open), which powers a massive community of >10K developers serving millions of monthly active users. Organizations like Opera, Ethereum, Brave, Microsoft, OpenSea and Cloudflare are betting on IPFS, and hundreds of nascent community-owned projects like Audius, Fleek, Textile, Qri, and more are building their businesses with IPFS. Together, we're baking new properties like individual agency, local-first collaboration, and disaster resilience into the internet - humanity's most important resource. Our work also includes protocol design and development for the *Filecoin Network* (a distributed storage marketplace to preserve humanity’s information) - including research, proofs, core protocol enhancements, cryptoeconomics, infra, & development for the Lotus reference implementation. Our two key focuses for 2021 are building in programmability into Filecoin via support for EVM smart contracts, and making it quick and easy to store large public data on Filecoin. We also contribute to important underlying protocols like *libp2p* (a modular p2p networking library used by IPFS, Filecoin, Ethereum, Polkadot, & many others), *IPLD* (the content addressed data model of web3, and *Drand* (a distributed randomness beacon run by the League of Entropy).

  • Google
    Google Search Pm Ii
    Google Mar 2017 - Aug 2018
    Mountain View, Ca, Us
In March 2017 I joined the Google Search team building a new whole-page framework for mobile search that now covers upwards of 10% of Google Search traffic and enables dynamic organization of search results around top user needs. After initial launch, I expanded this framework to support immersive search verticals (sports, local, health), and to dynamically identify top intents and serve them with structure web answers for long-tail queries.I also became the PM for Google Books in October 2017 - re-envisioning the UI, features, and information architecture for "Google's first moonshot" while managing all books and author data in Search.
  • Google
    Google Forms Pm
    Google Jun 2015 - Mar 2017
    Mountain View, Ca, Us
As of June 2015 I took on Google Forms in addition to the Classroom mobile apps - leading all strategy, definition, and execution for the new Forms redesign in Fall 2015. Under my tenure, we created Quizzes in Google Forms for faster formative assessments, and launched autocompleting questions & option suggestions - an intelligent feature built on Google's AI strengths. I worked closely with the Forms community to add a long-requested features and question types, like a "File Upload" question that stores selected files in Google Drive (requiring tricky cross-functional negotiation with the Drive team). I also led the strategy, design, and initial implementation of improved theming, question import, and additional auto-suggestion improvements.
  • Google
    Google Classroom Pm
    Google Aug 2014 - Mar 2017
    Mountain View, Ca, Us
I was the second PM on the Google Classroom team, joining shortly before initial launch and leading a 6-month sprint to design, development, and launch of the Classroom Android and iOS apps in January 2015 (5M installs in the first 6 months). In the 2 years after that, I designed and launched the Classroom Share Button (with major integrations like PBS and Duolingo), the ability to reuse posts in Classroom, the apps Notifications framework, and Annotations in our Classroom mobile apps. I also
  • Google
Associate Product Manager - Native Client
    Google Sep 2013 - Aug 2014
    Mountain View, Ca, Us
I joined Google as the Product Manager for Chrome Native Client, managing the launch of Portable Native Client (pNaCl) 2 months after starting at Google. After launch I led growth for PNaCl, forming and managing integrations with Adobe, Samsung, Figma, and Google Earth - driving strong internal and external growth of the Native Client platform. I also oversaw a collaboration with the ChromeOS team that brought Android apps to Chromebooks for the first time. The pain points and gaps I identified during this 1 year rotation led to the creation of WebAssembly as a shared cross-browser initiative.
