I am a qualitative researcher who studies language practices and lived experiences in contexts of health and medicine. I use methods ranging from interviews and observations to textual analysis and user experience testing to answer questions about how people talk about chronic illnesses, how technologies and interfaces impact patient outcomes, and how the stories people tell about health and medical experiences circulate and work in the world. I also teach classes in technical communication, scientific and medical communication, and narrative medicine, and serve as the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Writing Studies at the University of Minnesota.
