My primary role as a learning and behavioural support worker is to empower children to become confident in their identity and to recognise and grow holistically to reach their full potential within a school environment. The tasks I was assigned to at Northway Primary and Nursery School to perform this included:Planning and leading group or one-to-one learning, emotional and behavioral sessions. Assisting teachers to develop and evaluate support programmes to suit the needs of pupils within their class. Then to deliver these programmes within or away from the classroom setting. Recording and monitoring pupils’ progress and providing verbal or written reports regarding the pupils’ difficulties and/ or improvements to the class teacher.For a time I was a one-to-one support worker to a pupil with autism (4year old boy). During this time I shadowed his participation within the classroom setting for both academic and recreational activities, as well as during lunch and play times.I partnered with the teacher to create appropriate one-to-one sessions and materials which would help him become more accustomed and prepared for future group and classroom environments.Other responsibilities included:General classroom assistance (resource provision, teaching facilitation, overseeing pupils classroom work and progress).Researching and adapting materials to scaffolding the pupils ability to access the class curriculum.Lunch and break time duties.First aid duties.Participating in personal development e.g. school meetings and training.
