On my first day at work, my boss asked me the following question: "As an ambitious twenty-two-year-old readying to enter the corporate world, how can you quickly distinguish yourself as a winner?”He added, “Do not look this up on Google; if you do, you’ll find the answer and then you won’t learn.”This was a question posed to the great Jack Welch by a young graduate. Jack Welch's answer was as simple as it gets: "Forget some of the most basic habits you learned in school. Once you are in the real world— and it doesn’t make any difference if you are twenty-two or sixty-two, starting your first job or your fifth—the way to get ahead is to overdeliver."Overdeliver. Don't just meet expectations, exceed them. So simple, yet so impactful. This lesson my former boss taught me has stayed with me till date and forms a core part of everything I do. But it also got me thinking: "Why aren’t we taught such lessons in school or college? Why is formal education so distant from what actually helps us succeed in our professional lives?" This very thought lead to the creation of LeadUpp, a venture aimed at bridging the skill gap and empowering people with the skills they need to succeed. LeadUpp’s deep dive into the skill gap led to two major revelations: - Soft skills such as communication, leadership and the like, are more important for success than hard skills. - Very often, people take training because they have to, not because they want to.To solve these issues, LeadUpp ventured into building learning experiences that infuse career driving soft skills amongst professionals, so that they no longer have to learn them through trial and error.Oh, and when I say experiences, I mean experiences.
