Hello, I'm Mona.After studying Political Science and Public Policy at Victoria University, I developed a passion for making change in my community. This led to the Green Party and SAFE where I worked in several roles for five years.In 2021, I took on an opportunity to co-found Animals Aotearoa and work to end the worst suffering for chickens bred for meat in NZ.I'm passionate about animal welfare and making lasting changes in how we treat and think about animals.

Launched in 2021, Animals Aotearoa is an animal advocacy organisation campaigning to end the suffering of farmed animals in Aotearoa, focusing on chickens bred for meat. As the co-founder and Campaign Director at Animals Aotearoa, I work with the Board and Executive Director to set the strategic direction, implement campaigns and grow our charity. Some highlights from my first six months:- Launching a pledge to grow support for better welfare chickens in Aotearoa - https://bit.ly/BetterWelfareChickens- Meeting with food businesses in Aotearoa to discuss implementing the Better Chicken Commitment - https://bit.ly/NZChickenCommitment - Meeting with Green Party MP Chlöe Swarbrick to discuss the Better Chicken Commitment.Animals Aotearoa is starting to work with leading food companies to encourage them to commit to using slower-growing breeds of chicken, and other welfare improvements specified in the Better Chicken Commitment throughout their supply chain. We ask businesses to set clear deadlines for implementation and be transparent on reporting annual progress towards their commitments.

At SAFE I was a strategic, issues-based political campaigner. My campaign strategy for live export led to the Minister of Agriculture ordering a review of the trade. This campaign saw me planning and implementing a strategy to highlight live export as a major issue in New Zealand.I completed a Certificate in Proficiency in Animal Law and assisted the pro-bono Queens Council to gather evidence and submit SAFE’s case to ban farrowing crates to the High Court.
