Chief executive for scientific community of 8,000 researchers, clinicians and industry partners dedicated to advancing genetics and genomics knowledge to serve human health and society. ASHG hosts the field's largest scientific meeting; publishes a leading flagship journal and new open access journal; and offers year round programming to support professional education, advocacy, diversity and public engagement. I work with a dynamic board and accomplished staff team of 29 to support one of the most rapidly expanding research areas, with transformative impact for science, health and society. I guide strategic planning and implementation, grow resources through development and business operations, increase visibility for our advocacy agenda, strengthen programs and community collaborations, and guide new services that speed discovery and learning by the community.

SfN is a global professional society of more than 37,000 scientists and clinicians. Working with the executive director, Board, committees and a skilled staff team, led strategic planning and implementation of SfN's policy agenda, advocacy and global relations; award-winning public information programming; a wide array of professional development and diversity programs; membership, member communication and marketing; journal and annual meeting promotion and professional development content; and more. Provided strategy and management support for about 50 staff in my areas of responsibility. Directly responsible for strategic and operational financial management of SfN's then-$33M budget, sizeable reserve, and investment strategies, and secured more than $5M in federal and private grants. From 2014-2017, functioned as CFO, overseeing director of finance and authorizing/monitoring all accounting, budget, tax, grant and compliance responsibilities.

Created and managed program and organizational communication strategies for leading philanthropy. Positioned and promoted the $30M Pew invested annually in science, health, human service, and economic policy initiatives. Programs included the Pew Scholars and Fellows in the Biomedical Sciences, and Pew's programs addressing agricultural biotechnology, genetics, and nanotechnologies. Served as staff communications lead for executive matters such as legal issues, government and donor relations, and finance, as well as an institutional branding initiative.

Consulted with non-profit and for-profit organizations to promote policy and organizational outcomes. Successfully pitched target media outlets and coordinated outreach to key allies.

Supported and implemented business development strategies of executive leadership, helping to shape and develop proposals and programs for clients.

Consulted with a wide variety of non-profit and for-profit organizations to promote policy outcomes, advance brands, and enhance public awareness of key issues. Projects included management of a $3 million communication effort for 24-company private-sector health care coalition on health policy reform.

Led communications as senior staff member and reelection campaign communications director. Primary spokesperson and speechwriter. Addressed priority topics such as biomedical, space and physical science; impeachment; Social Security; and health care reform. Implemented communication strategies on legislation affecting state and national priorities and coordinated Senator’s message with national political agenda.

Managed national media on federal and state policy issues, legal cases, health studies, crisis communication, surgeon general nomination, and 501(c)(4) activities. Conducted extensive national media outreach. Served as spokesperson. Provided communication support to 160 affiliates on national and state policy and political issues.
