As a sergeant, my main responsibilities were to take care of the soldiers below me and carry out the missions assigned to me. As a squad leader, I oversaw the activities of 7-10 lower-ranking soldiers.I was generally the first non-commissioned officer that lower ranking soldiers looked to in their leadership structure. They looked to me for professional guidance and example. My responsibilities included ensuring that each soldier was competently trained to do their job to standard, knowing where all my soldiers were at all times, training them to function in their primary mission role, monitoring their personal appearance and overseeing their daily tasks. During my time in the Army, I was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I, for the 12 months ending December 2003. While I was there, I was attached to a transportation unit that actively transported fuel to various bases throughout Iraq. I have received several awards for service and leadership throughout my eight years of service. I received an honorable discharge upon completion of my contract in November 2007.
