About Monica Cherry, Lcsw
The very origin of my name means “advisor,” so I kind of feel like it was destiny that I became a social worker. Or maybe it was when they made me a Conflict Manager in 5th grade and gave me a cool hat and sash to wear at recess that gave me the authority to mediate conflicts that arose on the playground... Either way, I have always had a propensity for helping others, particularly the underdog. I believe in the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and that resilience isn’t just something we’re born with, but is something we can learn. That being said, sometimes social workers all get bunched together as idealists and social warriors and there might be social workers who wear these labels with pride (no judgment here). However, I would define myself more as an optimistic realist who chooses to fight her battles by educating future generations of social workers rather than taking to social media to share my opinions.Lastly, something I’m acutely aware of is that I am not everyone’s cup of tea and THAT’S OKAY! I totally respect that some people prefer coffee or fizzy water or a margarita while sitting on a beautiful beach watching the sunset. But if you do like tea, I think I’d say I’m like a chai latte with honey...strong, spicy, sweet, and soothing.

I provide programmatic oversight of the Crisis, Crisis Residential, and Supervised Residential programs. This includes a 16 person Mobile Crisis Response team that is responsible for assessing individuals of all ages experiencing acute mental health crises throughout Champaign, Ford, Iroquois, and Champaign counties. Our Crisis Residential Center is a 7-bed facility for the purpose of short-term psychiatric stabilization. This is a two-week long program that provides a safe environment for clients to engage in group and individual therapeutic sessions, case management services, and see a psychiatrist for medication management. Our Supervised Residential program includes two group homes in Champaign with a total of 13 beds for adults living with serious mental health issues who need a treatment facility to learn independent living skills in order to gain the necessary skills to live on their own successfully while maintaining stability of their mental health symptoms.

I am currently a licensed clinical social worker for Community Elements. I oversee a team of 8 clinicians in the Access/Crisis department. My team is responsible for assessing individuals in the Champaign County who are dealing with a variety of mental health crises (e.g. suicidality, homicidality, psychosis, depression, anxiety, etc) to determine what level of risk the person poses and what level of care is most appropriate. My team is also responsible for answering a 24 hour crisis line that fields approximately 400 calls a month. We work closely with local law enforcement to build the connection with first responders to clients in the community dealing with mental health issues.
